AMC: 1997 Erica Kane Book: Having it All

Since Susan Lucci is going to be releasing a real life book, I decided to do a write up on Erica’s tome about how to be successful. This hardcover from July 1997, (original price 17.95) explains the does and don’ts to “Having it All”. I’m not going to critique the book just summarize its contents.

The book begins with a chapter on Self-Love and no, not that kind, remember this book was published by ABC Daytime, so get the mind out of the gutter. Self-Love meaning loving yourself and believing you are perfect. The second chapter is pitfalls, or things you shouldn’t do. Erica mentions her brother’s drug addiction, for example. Avoid hate as that can destroy one also. She compares dealing with journalists is like playing polo in a minefield. She also says be wary of attorneys. This makes me laugh considering her relationship with Jackson. Humorously she states “Except for Trevor, they each spent three years in law school. Learning to speak out of both side of their mouths.” Another funny thing in this chapter is “Practically everyone I know has been presumed dead at least once.” That’s so true in Pine Valley and then she also states that you should be careful to avoid a head injury as to not get amnesia.

Chapter three discusses money and she mentions the Bible and how thankfully she’s a woman so she could go to heaven even if she is rich. Basically she believes money isn’t a substitute for love, but is important to have. Being rich didn’t make Nina happy for example. Chapter four discusses morality and Erica admits to having broken all of the 10 commandments. That said she has paid for her sins. There is one picture in this chapter of Erica in a habit which says “in disguise and on the run, from the time when lying was one of my best habits.” Can we say that was a pun or what? Chapter five focuses on romance. One funny comment was “a man doesn’t have to look like a mythical hero to be one.” She mentions Mike Roy wearing glasses, Dimitri having a scar, Jackson a tattoo, and Adam wicked eyes. Her main thrust was “embrace romance! Every day in every way.”

Chapter six is on marriage and divorce a topic Erica should know a lot about. She talks about the good and bad things that can happen and that child custody is always the worst for the children. Chapter seven is on motherhood. She talks about what she wishes for Bianca and that her daughter isn’t perfect because no child is. That said someone who has it all succeeds as a parent because they do their best. Chapter eight discusses forgiveness and how there is no peace without it. Erica mentions how she became friends with Brooke even if for many years they were sworn enemies. Also that even people she has been close to like Palmer, Adam, Opal, Tad and others were her enemies at one time. Chapter nine is about enjoying it all. This talks about spending money to have fine things, having housekeeping help and appreciating what you have.

The book has two more sections. One has the Erica’s Final Ten Tips. They are: be a good citizen, “Practice random acts of kindness acts of senseless, beauty”, never lend money, be kind to creatures, be open to out of body experiences, always use good manners, indulge your inner child, wear a watch, be prepared and don’t resist change. The last section is a Q&A with Erica. The one thing she has never done is gone to space, which is still true. She is asked about her best husband or lover and doesn’t answer that. And why she wears heels. And she admits it is due to her height.

That’s the highlights of this book. It is a fun read for what it is. Breezy and relaxing at just a tad under 150 pages.
