Today it was announced that "The Chew" is cancelled. Below are my thoughts on this development.
ABC posted a press release with the title Emmy® Award-Winning ‘Good Morning America’ Expands to Three Hours at the following link: https://www.disneyabcpress.com/abc/pressrelease/emmy-award-winning-good-morning-america-expands-to-three-hours/ Instead of leading with the news that "The Chew" was cancelled, they trumpeted the news that GMA will be on for a third hour in the time period that currently houses "The Chew". The release thanked those involved for "The Chew" for its seven years on the air. They will producing some episodes until September.
I feel sorry for the crew at "The Chew", as some of those workers have been with ABC and/or Disney for years. The less programming coming out of NYC the less opportunity for work, as it wouldn't be surprising if many of the GMA crew will be involved in the additional hour. That said, once the allegations came out about Mario Batali who was part of "The Chew", I wondered if something would happen to the program beyond his dismissal.
We'll see what happens to the other hosts of "The Chew": Michael Symon, Clinton Kelly, and Carla Hall. All three had success prior to the program, so I wouldn't be surprised to see them elsewhere. Honestly this doesn't bring back "All My Children" or "One Life to Live" so at best this would be a Pyrrhic victory for soap fans still lamenting the fact those programs are no longer in production.
