Thoughts on Daytime Emmy Nominations 2014

On Thursday, May 1, 2014 Emmyonline.org posted the 41st annual Daytime Emmy nominations. This year's winners have already been decided based on who was voted in the pre-nomination round. Below is the list and my thoughts on those that are included.

Drama Series

The Bold and the Beautiful
Days of Our Lives
One Life to Live
The Young and the Restless

Drama Series Writing Team

The Bold and the Beautiful
Days of Our Lives
The Young and the Restless

Drama Series Directing Team

One Life to Live
The Young and the Restless

Okay so General Hospital got completely snubbed in the major categories as did All My Children. The AMC snub wasn't surprising, but the GH one definitely is. Considering the field was only six shows, having three nominees is understandable. I'm extremely curious to see who wins once we know what has been submitted. I'm amazed that OLTL got two nods in the top three also.

Outstanding Lead Actress

Eileen Davidson (Kristen, DAYS)
Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke, B&B)
Heather Tom (Katie, B&B)
Arianne Zucker (Nicole, DAYS)

This category has only four nominees unlike the rest of the acting categories that have five. There were twelve prenominees, the only reason I can see them only including four actresses is because of ties and they didn't want to have six or more nominees. I wouldn't be surprised if Heather Tom got her third straight award simply based on material as Kristen is more of a camp character, and the other actresses have never won or been in the lead race. Actually I find that cool that we may have a "new winner".

Outstanding Lead Actor

Peter Bergman (Jack, Y&R)
Doug Davidson (Paul, Y&R)
Christian Jules LeBlanc (Michael, Y&R)
Jason Thompson (Patrick, GH)
Billy Miller (ex-Billy, Y&R)

Ten people were pre-nominated in this category, and half of them got nominations. This category could also be called who is the best actor on Y&R. Jason Thompson from GH is the only actor in this category to have never won a Daytime Emmy. Last year's winner Doug Davidson could repeat. Billy Miller had the most consistent material throughout 2013 though, but since Jason Thompson is the only GH person he could win just cause the others somehow cancelled each other out in the balloting.

Outstanding Supporting Actress

Melissa Claire Egan (Chelsea, Y&R)
Jane Elliot (Tracy, GH)
Amelia Heinle (Victoria, Y&R)
Elizabeth Hendrickson (Chloe, Y&R)
Kelly Sullivan (ex-Connie, GH)

Half of the pre-nominees got a nomination. What I find oddly amusing is all the Y&R nominees used to be on AMC and if you go far back even Jane Elliot also was on that show, before some of her fellow nominees were even alive. (Yes I love that "useless" soap opera trivia pops in my head at random times.) Whomever won would be a first time winner or in Jane Elliot's case a first time in over 30 years winner, which I figure would be a record for the Daytime Emmys as longest between awards.

Outstanding Supporting Actor

Bradford Anderson (ex-Spinelli, GH)
Steve Burton (Dylan, Y&R)
Scott Clifton (Liam, B&B)
Eric Martsolf (Brady, DAYS)
Dominic Zamprogna (Dante, GH)

There were 13 pre-nominees. The insanity of this category is everyone except for Eric Martsolf has been on GH though he and Dom are first time nominees. Scott Clifton won last year (in a tie with Billy Miller). Steve Burton won in the past for his work on GH.

Outstanding Younger Actress

Kristen Alderson (Kiki, GH)
Linsey Godfrey (Caroline, B&B)
Hunter King (Summer, Y&R)
Kim Matula (Hope, B&B)
Kelley Missal (Danielle, OLTL)

There were 10 pre-nominees, so again half of those made it to the final round. I think it is cool to see Kelley Missal included as she had some interesting work on OLTL. I actually like everyone in this category, though I think that Kim had the most material in 2013.

Outstanding Younger Actor

Bryan Craig (Morgan, GH)
Chad Duell (Michael, GH)
Max Ehrich (Fenmore, Y&R)
Chandler Massey (ex-Will, DAYS)
Daniel Polo (ex-Jamie, Y&R)

Ten people were in the pre-nomination round again. The big question in this category is will Chandler Massey win the award for a third time. That would be crazy, but not impossible based on scenes. I'm really not sure who the front runner is though the guys on GH got a lot more regular material than the other nominees.

The "Web Show" Category aka New Approaches

DeVanity
Tainted Dreams
The Power Inside
Venice the Series

I had to google The Power Inside as I never heard of it. This is a science fiction project that combined the web with its storytelling that starred Harvey Keitel. The other shows are known to soap fans as cast and crew members have ties to the daytime community. Tainted Dreams didn't release a full season, so I'm a bit surprised they got nominated, and wonder when they will share more with the audience.

Other soap related nominations include recognition for Jeanne Cooper's tribute episode (competing against parades and the like), and soap alumna Rebecca Budig is nominated in the outstanding host in a lifestyle/travel program. The full list of nominations has everything listed including the tech categories. Of the shows currently on the air, Y&R had the most nominations followed by B&B, GH and Days.
