GL: 60th Anniversary of TV Premiere

Today June 30, 2012 is the 60th anniversary of Guiding Light's premiere on television in 1952. Unlike most radio shows of that era, that were moved to television, GL's migration was successful and remained on the air for over 50 years.

GH: Two Big News Items

This week two big things happened with General Hospital. GH is officially moving to 2 PM ET and 1 CT and PT starting on September 10, 2012. The other surprising thing was that General Hospital premiered a new opening on Friday, June 29, 2012 usually such changes happen on Mondays, not the last day of the month.

Thoughts on the 2012 Daytime Emmy Show

Last night (Saturday, June 23, 2012), the 39th Annual Daytime Emmys aired on HLN. Here are my thoughts on the broadcast, which started at 8 PM EDT and ended about 10:08 PM EDT. Prior to this, HLN had a Showbiz Tonight Special on Friday night, and a red carpet show immediately before the awards. On Sunday night, they are rebroadcasting, the red carpet show once, and the actual awards twice.

Late last week, confirmation came that Peter Reckell is leaving the role of Bo Brady on Days of Our Lives. On Monday (June 18, 2012), Peter tweeted about his feelings on his departure from the program. If you don't want to go on twitter, SOD summarized all of them here. Bo will be on air until some time in October based upon how far in advance Days tapes their episodes.

GL: Springfield Through the Years Disc 3

Here are my thoughts and a summary of the episodes on disc three of the soapclassics.com 20 classic episode Guiding Light release. The episodes on the disk range over a more than 20 year period. What I find amusing is how three holidays were represented: Christmas, the 4th of July and Election Day. The other two episodes focused on milestones: the 15,000 episode and the 70th anniversary in January 2007.

Days: Stefano's Been Shot

On the Friday, June 1, 2012 episode of Days of Our Lives, Stefano (Joe Mascolo) was shot. It was a dark and stormy night in Salem and many of its residents were capable of shooting the Phoenix. Does she or doesn't she? Book

The latest book I've read with a soap opera theme is "Does she or doesn't she?" by Alisa Kwitney. This novel came out in 2003 and is written by someone who never worked in soaps. She does credit soap writer Stephanie Braxton, for teaching her about the genre. Below is a summary with spoilers and some thoughts on this book.
