GL: Bauer Family DVDs and a Freebie Summary

On Tuesday, April 17, 2012, a new eleven episode "Guiding Light" set was released focusing on the Bauer Family. To promote this, soapclassics.com posted an episode that originally aired on October 21, 1988. Here is a summary on the free episode, which will be posted for a limited time.

The two main stories in this episode are Rick (Michael O’Leary) and Meredith (Nicolette Goulet) getting married and the quadrangle of Reva (Kim Zimmer), Josh (Robert Newman), Sonni (Michelle Forbes) and Will (Joe Breen).

Rick and Meredith plan to get married at the hospital chapel. Most of the scenes in this episode take place in various parts of Cedars. Phillip (Grant Aleksander) gives Meredith a research grant. Ed (Peter Simon) and Lillian (Tina Sloan) are looking at the sonogram of Meredith's baby. What they don’t know is that Rick is not the father of the fetus, this is a secret that Meredith hasn’t shared with anyone except her friend Blake (Elizabeth Dennehy) and her brother Fletcher (Jay Hammer). At this point, the characters do not know that Blake is really Christina, but she tries to be a good friend and help Meredith keep her secret.

Harley (Beth Ehlers) and Alan-Michael (Carl Tye Evans) are together and she is in a loud red outfit. There is a line about her being overdressed and being a backup singer for Whitney Houston. AM is not part of the wedding, even though Rick is his mother’s first cousin. Harley asks him to introduce him to the family as soon she will be a relative. Maureen (Ellen Parker) and Ed seem stunned when meeting Harley and Frank (Frank Dicopolous) that AM plans on marrying Harley.

Fletcher isn't with Meredith at the hospital, but goes to find Rick who is out fishing. Fletcher tells Rick that he cannot give Meredith away. He talks about how this is a lifelong commitment. Mindy comes up and kisses Rick, and says does he want a chance to have the one that got away. Of course, Fletcher still is dealing with the loss of his wife Maeve, though she is not mentioned by name. Also Fletcher knows Meredith slept with another man, and Rick isn't the father of her baby. He leaves, and Rick and Mindy (Krista Teserau) chat. They joke around about it and how they would drive each other crazy to be a married couple. He admits that he loves her still a little bit. Rick and Mindy are fooling around and singing. Phillip shows up and joins in with them, it is comically bad. Mindy makes a joke about how corporate Phillip has become. Phillip takes the sonogram picture to them. They do the blue skies and palomino ponies speech.

Hawk (Gil Rogers) has a video camera, and we see little Ben and Michelle. Rusty (Terrell Anthony) and Rose (Alexandra Neil) come together to the wedding. Rusty was involved in both stories in this episode.

Johnny (James Goodwin) and Chelsea (Kassie Wesley now Kassie DePaiva) sing “Honestly I believe in You.” Rick and Phillip walk out, then the kids, then Maureen and Blake who are the attendants wearing fuchsia gowns with pillbox hats. Then Fletcher gives Meredith away, as he changed his mind. Right before Rick walks down the aisle, a fellow doctor mentions that Meredith will have a baby in six months. Mindy runs out of the chapel during the ceremony. Rick’s face is shown when it dawns on him that he and Meredith were separated when she became pregnant. The episode closes on his look of shock.

Josh is at Cross Creek holding baby Marah. He is telling her about everything in the house, like the carved initials and the animal rug. It is raining outside. Reva and Josh talk about how Sonni cheated on him. She talks about the whole Madonna/whore complex, and how with Josh women are either saints or sinners. Reva says Sonni isn't the person that Josh believes she is. Reva accuses Sonni of hitting Will on the head causing him to lose his memory. We see some flashbacks of Sonni and Josh's relationship. Reva realizes that Sonni may hurt Will and they need to get back to Springfield to protect him.

Rusty is outside of Dr. Eileen Lyndon's office, she is speaking with Will. Sonni finds Rusty lurking at Cedars. Will has an injury and gets headaches, but trauma is forcing things. Repressive amnesia looks to be a diagnosis. Sonni threatens Rusty with a lawsuit. Later inside the psychiatrist’s room, Rusty gets threatened with a restraining order for his actions. While alone, Sonni is able to convince Will to drop Dr. Lyndon as his doctor and have her help instead. Before turning Will's case over to Sonni's care, Eileen wants to try one more thing: hypnosis. While under, Will starts remembering a fight with Sonni. He is strangling Sonni, and then starts holding his head and screaming.

When it comes to the new set, I’m looking forward to it. Having a disk with episodes from 1973, 1977 and 1980 make me happy. I never thought I’d be able to purchase Papa Bauer’s funeral. Seldom has the idea of watching a funeral put a smile on my face, but this is an exception. I’m also glad for the additional 90s episodes as there have been a lot less of those in comparison to some other time frames.
