Days: Head Writer Swap

Today Soap Opera Network had breaking news. The current head writer Dena Higley is out and has been replaced by Marlene McPherson (used to be credited as Marlene Clark Poulter) and Darrell Ray Thomas Jr.

A lot of people are rejoicing as interest in Days has been dropping in some quarters. I really can't tell if they Days fans are happier than the General Hospital ones with this news or if it is a tie.

This news is very surprising, and hopefully the new team does a good job. Since they are untested in the head-writing field, I have no idea what to expect. From IMDB it looks like they both worked together at Passions. Thomas worked for a short time at Days before Passions. McPherson had a longer and more varied career in soaps. She started at GH in the 80s (sadly I doubt I have anything by her from that era), than was at Days for most of the 90s.

I’m hoping to find some episodes either of them worked on prior to getting this gig. Since I have videos of both Passions and Days of Our Lives, I have a decent shot in locating something in my collection before any of their episodes air as they tape over six weeks ahead.

Due to the way Days is written, it looks like the entire summer will still be Higley material. In the last couple of weeks, it has been mentioned that they were taping August episodes. Hopefully they can start tweaking for material to air in September, but due to the extreme lead time in writing that may not even be possible.

Hopefully this will be a good change for Days of Our Lives. Of course, it may be just another one of the failed fights to “save Days”, but either way we all shall see.
