Thoughts on Daytime Emmy Nominations 2011

Here are my thoughts on the Daytime Emmy Nominations for 2011. The broadcast will be Father’s Day, June 19, 2011 on CBS. Wayne Brady is hosting, and as his show replaced Guiding Light on the CBS schedule, I am glad they waited to have him in this gig.

The honorary Daytime Emmys are going to game show hosts this year: Pat Sajack (Wheel of Fortune) and Alex Trebek (Jeopardy!). Hopefully they will show some interesting clips from years ago, especially one of WOF when they had shopping for prices. That used to make me laugh as people ended up with ceramic animals. With Alex maybe they will feature some of his none Jeopardy! clips for grins and giggles. Neither of them is nominated for best game show host this year.

The overall tallies for soap operas are the following: AMC - 13, ATWT - 4, B&B - 14, Days - 5, GH - 21, OLTL - 12, Y&R – 20. If one just looks at acting nods: AMC – 5, ATWT – 3, B&B – 3, Days – 2, GH – 7, OLTL – 2, Y&R – 6. By network for acting awards there is a closer parity between CBS (12) and ABC (14). That would be the one success of the pre-nomination system. Of course, that doesn’t mean that we don’t have a lot of the same names.

Outstanding Drama Series
All My Children
The Bold and the Beautiful
General Hospital
The Young and the Restless

This category is a repeat from last year. Will B&B get three in a row?

Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series
B&B
GH
One Life to Live
Y&R

Three of the four nominees are the same as last year. GH was last year’s winner. All My Children was replaced by Y&R.

Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series
As the World Turns
B&B
Days of Our Lives
Y&R

Three of the four nominees are the same as last year. Days replaced AMC on the ballot and B&B won in 2010.

B&B and Y&R are nominated in all of the big three categories. GH has two of three, with AMC, ATWT Days, and OLTL being listed in only one of them. So basically everyone got a bit of love, as no show was completely ignored.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Alicia Minshew as Kendall Slater AMC
Debbi Morgan as Angie Hubbard AMC
Colleen Zenk as Barbara Ryan ATWT
Susan Flannery as Stephanie Forrester B&B
Laura Wright as Carly Corinthos Jacks GH
Michelle Stafford as Phyllis Summers Y&R

Last year’s winner Maura West (Carly, ATWT) was not nominated. The only woman who was nominated last year in this category is Michelle Stafford. She and Flannery have won in this category in the past.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series
Ricky Paull Goldin as Jake Martin AMC
Michael Park as Jack Snyder ATWT
James Scott as EJ DiMera Days
Maurice Benard as Sonny Corinthos GH
Christian Le Blanc as Michael Baldwin Y&R

Last year’s winner was Michael Park. He and James Scott are the only repeat nominees from last year, though Goldin was nominated in supporting last year.

This list while not perfect at least has people from six of the seven shows on the ballot. That’s progress from other years. That said, OLTL being completely shut out is strange, though not shocking as I can count on two hands the people who’ve been nommed from that show in these categories.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Melissa Claire Egan as Annie Chandler AMC
Julie Pinson as Janet Ciconne ATWT
Heather Tom as Katie Logan Spencer B&B
Nancy Lee Grahn as Alexis Davis GH
Bree Williamson as Jessica Brennan OLTL
Tricia Cast as Nina Webster Y&R

Two of the six nominees were in the supporting category last year: Pinson (who won last year) and Williamson. Cast, Tom and Grahn are past Emmy winners.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Jonathan Jackson as Lucky Spencer GH
Jason Thompson as Patrick Drake GH
Brian Kerwin as Charlie Banks OLTL
Doug Davidson as Paul Williams Y&R
Billy Miller as Billy Abbott Y&R

Three of the five nominees from this year were honored last year in this category (Jackson, Kerwin, and Miller who won) and Davidson was in lead last year. Only Jason Thompson is new to the Emmy game.

Like the lead categories, the supporting ones include performers from six of the seven shows.

Outstanding Younger Actress in a Drama Series
Brittany Allen as Marissa Chandler AMC
Lexi Ainsworth as Kristina Corinthos GH
Emily O'Brien as Jana Hawkes Y&R

Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series
Scott Clifton as William Spencer III aka Liam Cooper B&B
Chandler Massey as Will Horton Days
Chad Duell as Michael Corinthos GH

With younger actress, it is weird how two of the three actresses are no longer employed at the show they got nominated for their 2010 work. None of the people in this category were nominated last year. The role of Marissa was recast, while Jana was recently died. The younger actors, unlike last year are nominated for shows they are employed at: progress. I wonder if there were ties in these categories, causing only three people to be nominated per show. Clifton was in this category last year, but for his work on OLTL. I believe he is the only actor to have been nominated for younger actor for roles in three different shows.

This year is the last year for nominations for ATWT. Next year will be the last for AMC, and the year after for OLTL (though since it will only be on for one month in 2012) who knows if people will submit. This may be the last time, we even get a Daytime Emmy show in the current format, as we lose shows, the pool of potential actors that can be nominated will decrease even further. How depressing is that? I wonder and hope that AMC and/or OLTL get tributes.
