One of the big stories on The Young & the Restless is about the youngest denizen of Genoa City, Lucy. Billy Abbott and his wife Victoria Newman Abbott had been raising her, but she is the biological child of Daisy and Daniel. At first only Daniel has any idea that, the Abbotts illegally adopted his baby. Now everyone knows which has caused a lot of strife. This entry is only up to date for US episodes.
Currently Daniel has custody of his daughter, but has decided that Billy and Victoria are the best parents for her. He moved into their garage apartment, with the caveat that he must have access to a flat screen television to watch baseball. The couple agreed, but if children’s services sees this arrangement the child may be sent away again. The revelation of Lucy's parenthood came out to most everyone after she was kidnapped by Jana.
Daniel’s mother Phyllis is a fly in the ointment. She cannot accept her son’s choice to allow another family to raise her granddaughter. Phyllis will do anything to keep the girl. She tried to guilt Daniel and the others, but now she acted. On the Restless Style website, she posted a story trying to get Daisy to return to Genoa City. Phyllis tried to get her best friend Michael involved in the case as her lawyer. He begged out because Victoria’s father Victor is his boss and he doesn’t think she should have custody either. Since Daisy tortured Michael’s wife Lauren, he also doesn’t want anything to do with bringing her back into town.
Due to the illegal adoption situation, Billy may face criminal charges. The judge agreed to leave him alone for now if he did not write about the situation in the press. What Phyllis did may push the judge into arresting or charging Billy for the shady action. On top of that, we have the issue of the custody of Billy and Victoria’s other children. Currently Chloe is suing for sole custody of her daughter Delia, to keep her away from Billy. That’s how the illegal adoption came to the attention of the court. Victoria lost custody of her son Reed to his father J.T. So even if Daniel wants Billy and Victoria to raise Lucy, the courts may not agree to it regardless of his wishes.
A story like this can raise the question “what is a family?” Is it biology or love? I believe that Daniel loves his daughter, but wants what is best for her and that isn’t him. By allowing the Abbotts’ to adopt Lucy, he will still get to look into her life without the parenting responsibility. Kevin had been interested in raising Daisy’s baby, but no longer as he feels she is in a good home too.
Phyllis wanting to control the situation may completely backfire if everyone becomes angry with her. Billy is her boss, and Victoria is her daughter Summer’s aunt. They aren’t strangers or hate her guts, so why can’t she still be part of Lucy’s life. Open adoptions do exist and this situation would be a time this could be employed. I wish someone would tell her that regardless of who Lucy’s legal parents are she can still be Lucy’s grandmother. Daniel not having physical custody or raising her doesn’t mean that Phyllis can’t spoil and love the little girl who shares her red hair.
Hopefully in the coming weeks, there will be a resolution in Lucy’s situation. Regardless of biology this girl has a lot of people who love her.
