Y&R: The Battle over Newman Enterprises

This week on The Young & The Restless, Victor Newman lost arbitration and has to pay three of his children 500 million dollars each. Abby his youngest started this fight, as she wanted access to her trust fund. Victoria joined in after being hurt by Victor one too many times. At the very end, Nicholas sided with his sisters due to Victor allowing Sharon to be accused of Skye’s death.

Ultimately, Victor lost because he lied. He told Adam he would help Sharon, if Adam supported his father. Adam testified, but then left due to Nicholas. The Judge threw out his comments. Neil though came through and told the truth. He was the one responsible for the trusts and knew there was no way Adam could have altered them. By going to testify, he enraged Victor, but Neil spoke out because he couldn’t accept the lie.

Victor isn’t going to go down without a fight, but even Michael doesn’t believe that he can change the outcome. This lawsuit stopped being about what Abby wanted, which was money to pay for her reality show “The Naked Heiress”, but now seems to have morphed into let’s get revenge on Daddy Victor. That perhaps is why Victor is willing to talk with Abby unlike the older two. Abby wasn’t acting out of spite or anger. She just wanted to be given the opportunity to handle her money in the way she saw fit.

Nicholas at this point isn’t happy about what Victor did to Sharon. He wasn’t happy about Diane either. He developed feelings for her, and his father is wooing Diane. Victoria’s anger stems from how Victor has treated her since her marriage to Billy Abbott, whom Victor loathes. These are listed in no particular order. He made her take the fall for him with the SEC, though she ultimately didn’t go to prison. This situation made her leave Newman Enterprises as she had to resign due to the scandal. On her wedding day to Billy, Victor had Victoria arrested. They barely were able to get out their vows before she was dragged away. On top of that, she was pregnant when this happened and she later miscarried. Due to Billy, Victor has been ignoring her when not trying to destroy her marriage. This is not the way to endear yourself to your child.

Since they won the case, the question is what will happen with the money? Will Victor have to liquidate the company to pay them off? Will there be some sort of other deal to fix things? People have been losing their jobs due to the lawsuit, and if the company has to be sold off in part or goes under even more innocent employees will pay the price.

Victoria’s goal is to get Beauty of Nature from Victor instead of the money. This situation frustrated Abby as she didn’t care about that division. Nicholas’s goal beyond getting out from under Victor’s thumb is uncertain. Would he be happy with working with Tucker and the others?

Jack was the person who helped Abby the most to launch the case. He wishes for Beauty of Nature just like Victoria does. If he succeeds somehow in this action with Abby’s help, Tucker would give him half control of Jabot, which is Jack’s father’s legacy. Victor stole the company from the Abbott family so getting it back is a major goal. This angle is an interesting one to me. How will the Jabot situation influence the relationships between Tucker and Ashley, and Victoria and Billy? Ashley isn’t happy if Tucker or Jack uses Abby, but she can’t deny that John’s company means something to her. Billy being John’s son also has a stake in Jabot. While Abby is a Newman, Jack is her Uncle too. These cross loyalties hopefully will come into play in this story.

At the outset of this plot, I wasn’t too excited by it, but now I see possibilities for future story advancement. There have been very few corporate stories in daytime in recent years, and I appreciate that Y&R has been touching upon those roots in their storytelling.
