AMC, GH: Green Card Relationships

Currently both All My Children and General Hospital have plots about getting married for a green card. This puzzled me, as it isn’t the kind of story that is done too often in daytime soaps. Perhaps they were inspired by the 2009 movie “The Proposal” which centered on a woman who decides to marry her assistant to stay in the United States, and by the end of the movie they fall in love.

All My Children’s green card marriage is between Tad Martin and Cara Castillo. Cara had been married to Tad’s younger brother Jake. They met while working for Doctors without Borders. She left Jake for the sake of his safety, and never fell out of love with him. Meanwhile a heartbroken Jake came back to Pine Valley. Eventually he committed to Amanda and they share a son named Trevor.

When Cara came to town, Amanda felt threatened. She involved immigration, which caused this mess. Tad stepped in and decided to marry Cara. While he didn’t love her, he felt that he was doing the world a service. There were drug dealers who wanted to hurt Cara, and marrying her kept her safe. Even though Cara and Tad did not marry for love, they seem to have a good time together and like each other’s company. Unlike Cara, Tad has given up on love or better explained he had the best with his late wife Dixie and nothing will compare. If AMC comes to a close anytime soon, I must admit if I had my choice we’d find out that Dixie wasn’t dead “again”, and reunite them.

Since the Martin clan is so close, it remains to be seen what will happen. Will Cara fall out of love with Jake and in love with Tad? Will Tad start caring about Cara in a romantic sense? Will Jake leave Amanda or at least rekindle his feelings for Cara? Will Cara destroy or seriously damage Tad and Jake’s brotherly bond?

General Hospital’s Lucky and Siobhan didn’t have a green card relationship at first. They got involved while Lucky was undercover for Interpol in Ireland. Siobhan and Lucky started to care for each other, but the relationship has had to speed up. During “The Proposal” a line was uttered about how to just date they would have to marry or else she would be deported. That seems to be the place that Lucky and Siobhan are. To have a relationship in Port Charles they need to be married or else she goes back to Ireland. Siobhan had worked with the Balkan due to the kidnapping of her sister. Who knows if that will come back to haunt them at a later date?

When Lucky and Siobhan were at the justice of the peace, he got a phone call. A car hit Jake, Lucky’s son by circumstance and not by blood. Will Jake’s accident push Lucky closer to his former wife Elizabeth? Will Siobhan be able to compete with family ties and history? Will she get deported before she has a chance to see where her relationship with Lucky will lead?

Both of the stories mentioned above are in the middle of their arcs. It is too soon to tell if either All My Children or General Hospital is committed to their particular green card pairings.
