Due to unforeseen circumstances, I was able to catch part of Bold and the Beautiful and all of As the World Turns on Friday. Here are some of my thoughts on these two shows that I once watched regularly and now see a lot less often.
I was shocked by the part of Bold and the Beautiful I saw. And it was actually in a positive way. Keeping up on-line and in the magazine, I'm obviously aware of the whole Brooke and Oliver having sex at a masked party. Oliver had no idea that he was fornicating with the mother of the girl who he really wanted to be with Hope. The reason for the confusion was Hope and Brooke were dressed the same as were Oliver and Ridge. Brooke thought she was being intimate with Ridge obviously.
For Brooke, this was the second time she betrayed one of her children. Years earlier, she slept with her older daughter Bridget's man, Deacon. Deacon is Hope's biological father ironically. What amazed me was that Ridge forgave Brooke for having sex with her daughter's boyfriend and so quickly. Yes it was a case of mistaken identity, but one would think after all these years that Brooke would know Ridge's kisses and everything else for that matter.
The idea that Ridge forgave her at all, was just a breathe of fresh air. No accusations, no more lies, just the truth. The scene I saw between the two characters seemed surprisingly long as well, and reminded me of the scenes that used to be commonplace in daytime. Even if Brooke told the truth solely to not be blackmailed, that was preferable to her lying or coming up with some sort of counterattack to protect herself.
All I hope is that the next time I see B&B that Brooke is not pregnant with Oliver's kid. That would be yet another case of history repeating in a way I would rather not see. When it came to her relationship with Ridge, Brooke telling the truth was the best thing she could do. Of course, this doesn’t mean that Hope will be forgiving.
Thoughts on Friday’s As the World Turns episode
The last episode of As the World Turns I saw, I blogged about earlier this month. This episode luckily was a continuation of those events.
First off, I was surprised that Barbara was still being held in the airtight room with the clown Chuckles. Chuckles had Henry’s voice and we saw her interact with him even if he was inanimate. Of course, perhaps naming the clown Chuckles was homage to The Mary Tyler Moore show. As one of its most famous episodes was the one in which he passed away. After her Chuckles dreams stopped, she saw herself as Anne Boleyn and Henry was his namesake Henry the VIII.
The expected chants of off with her head and the like were part of the dream. Even Barbara’s children wanted her dead, though it is doubtful in the hallucination they were her kids. Eventually in the dream, Henry chose her over Vienna. With that Barbara got the courage to fight to leave the room.
Meanwhile, both Katie and Vienna tried to talk to Henry. Henry of course was angry with them as Katie helped Vienna with her lies, and Vienna for lying. Henry now knew that Vienna was not pregnant. It was also revealed that Barbara had been missing since before Vienna and Henry’s wedding ceremony.
Will and Gwen were back in town as Barbara was to look after little Hallie. Of course, there is no way that Barbara would miss out in taking care of her grandchild, so they were suspicious. Paul had received a postcard from Barbara, but that was revealed as a fake. Will and Gwen found her passport still in her room. Also Barbara had never gone through customs to leave the United States.
While Emily hates her monster-in-law, she swears she had nothing to do with her disappearance. Paul though thought his wife could have done something, which really upset her.
Katie revealed that Barbara knew the pregnancy was not legitimate, before the ceremony. Henry then believed Vienna was hiding Barbara from him. Katie swore she had nothing to do with Barbara being missing. While Katie has forgiven Henry for Brad’s death, he can’t forgive Katie yet for Barbara’s disappearance. It would be sad after all these years if Katie and Henry weren’t friends by the time As the World Turns goes off the air.
The only thing I found bothersome in the episode was it looked like Henry was wearing a ring on his hand when he massaged Vienna. He didn’t really want to touch her, but it was a ploy to be alone with her to get news about Barbara. Hopefully by the next time I see As the World Turns, Barbara will be free of the room, and back with Henry.
This blog is mainly about soaps, though it will sometimes veer into other topics. The main purpose is to provide a space for when board discussion isn't enough as sometimes my thoughts and feelings take on a life of their own. Even if some of the shows I enjoy have been cancelled, I will continue to post about them. They may take away the shows, but they can't destroy the love.
