GH: Just Boom

General Hospital’s Sonny Corinthos had a brilliant plan to eliminate his enemy Johnny Zacchara – a car bomb. Unfortunately as tactics go this one failed, as his daughter Kristina was the only one who got hurt, though she was out of the hospital within two days.

As a viewer, I don’t know what I was expecting, but sadly I wanted more. While I’m not a fan of exploding teenagers, I don’t get why Sonny attempt to blow up Johnny didn’t have more bite. In the 1990’s, the scenes in which Sonny’s pregnant wife Lily was killed by a car bomb were seen as some of the most memorable for the character. The sequence called clink, boom, had Jax and Brenda together drinking and tapping glasses (the clink) and the boom being the car being blown to bits. The car was outside of Luke’s club, that particular night. Lily wasn’t the target, but she paid with her life. Back then, being in the mob or near those in that business meant there was a threat of danger.

Was the main reason for this plot point to see how low Sonny can go? Sonny may make his living as a mob boss, but he loves his family. To protect his daughter, he gets Max and Milo to find someone to plant a car bomb. While I can understand why Sonny was horrified by his teenager Kristina and Johnny who is 30, before the bomb exploded, he knew nothing was going on at all. Seventeen year old Kristina being able to manipulate all these mobsters shows her Cassadine side. Prior to being in the garage, Kristina finally agreed with Johnny that she would stop using him to make her father angry.

Sam thought Sonny may be guilty. Alexis wanted Sonny to tell her the truth either way. In the future, if Alexis does find out Sonny was responsible, will she finally allow Kristina to stay away from Sonny? I hope so, as Alexis did give Sonny the opportunity to tell her what happened even if he did order the bomb to be planted.

If Johnny had been hurt by the explosion, Kristina would have blamed herself for it all the while hating Sonny even more than she has been for the last few months. Will Sonny and Kristina’s relationship be fixed? It is interesting as with her issues Kristina in some ways is a mirror to Sonny. He vowed to be nothing like the abusive pig of a stepfather, and yet his daughter feels abused. Kristina is using people to get out from under her personal emotional pain.

I did appreciate that Lucky suspects Sonny of the bombing, while Mac feels there is no way that Sonny would want a variation of that painful history. Lucky thought Sonny may be responsible, but finding out that Ethan wasn’t with Johnny that night due to Luke is enough proof for him. Unfortunately as a police detective, that kind of information isn’t enough to make Sonny pay. Mac knows what it is like to lose a child, so I don’t think it even crossed his mind that Sonny would risk Kristina’s safety to get Johnny away from her.

My question watching all of this is how it will influence story in the future. Even if Sonny doesn’t pay in a criminal sense for the explosion, it may take a toll on his personal relationships. The people who love Kristina may not be able to forgive what Sonny did and that he lied about it. If Johnny does nothing to Sonny in revenge, unlike his personal crusade to avenge his sister’s death, does that increase his stock with everyone else in Port Charles? I’m really not sure, but hopefully most of the areas I touched upon in this blog will be explored by General Hospital.
