OLTL: Farewell, Kyle and Fish

This week on One Life to Live we saw the swan song of medical student Kyle Lewis and police officer Oliver Fish. The couple got their happy ending while remaining in Llanview.

Kyle and Oliver were rare for American daytime soap opera as a loving gay couple. About six months ago, I wrote about Kyle, Oliver and Nick, who was dating Kyle at that time. I was enjoying the story and the possibilities for the future.

Oliver admitted his feelings for Kyle during a symbolic marriage ceremony for same sex couples. Kyle was to wed Nick, who had fallen in love with Kyle and this was too much for Oliver. Before “I do” was said, Fish told the truth about his sexuality as the protesters criticized those assembled. Obviously, Nick and Kyle broke up due to Oliver. Oliver and Kyle spent the night together talking and decided to becoming involved with one another again.

There were confrontations in town due to symbolic mass wedding. Nick was beaten due to his sexuality. He moved in with Kyle temporarily, while he was dealing with his physical and emotional wounds. Oliver was worried that Nick was not over Kyle, but Kyle was not. Nick made a pass at Kyle and lied about another room in the Angel Square Hotel being available for him to stay at during his recovery.

This story was cut short as the people who beat up Nick were caught quickly. We didn’t see the trial or Nick deal with his issues over what happened that particular night. He disappeared from the program.

During their relationship, Kyle and Oliver got two love scenes. The first time they nearly made love after all those years together was interrupted by a call about the gay bashing. The second time on New Year’s Eve the couple consummated their relationship. The duo even had a love song and candles. They were treated like any other couple.

Oliver’s time as a closeted man did have one positive end result—a baby named Sierra Rose. Oliver was upset dealing with his sexuality that he was called on by Cris and Layla. He got extremely drunk and slept with Stacy Morasco. She became pregnant, and tried to keep the child’s paternity a secret from everyone with the help of her best friend Kim. Once Stacy died after falling through the ice trying to get to the baby, a fight began over her. Stacy’s sister Gigi was arguing with Schuyler who assumed he was the dad.

Oliver and Kyle suspected something was up, but Oliver was scared to be a father. Without his permission, Kyle took DNA samples of Fish and the little girl. After Sierra Rose was kidnapped, due to the assumption that her grandfather was Mitch, Oliver looked at the test results. When the girl was rescued, he took her back to the apartment he shared with Cris and Layla. Roxy had believed she was the girl’s grandmother, but as Kyle’s best friend, she would still take the role with the child. Gigi also came over and spent some time with the baby. She still wanted custody of little Sierra Rose, but she realized that her father Oliver should raise the girl.

Oliver Fish got custody of his daughter Sierra Rose. Kyle and Oliver left the courthouse together with her. That is the last image we received of this couple.

Many people are upset over how One Life to Live dropped this story. I can understand their issues and I believe that the story could have continued. Kyle and Oliver got a happy ending, but it ended so abruptly. I am glad that OLTL even told this story, even with the less than gracious way things were handled by the program during its conclusion.
