Last week we had tax day in the USA and the last episode of Ugly Betty. Rumors have already begun about the possibility of a movie, but who knows if that will come to pass.
Ugly Betty lasted for four seasons, and saw its real life cast move from New York City to Los Angeles and then back to NYC. For many the show seemed to be finally coming together once the cancellation was announced. In my opinion, while Ugly Betty wasn’t canceled due to the WGA strike, I do think it was harmed by it. The truncated season messed up the flow of the program and only really recovered this last year.
What I appreciated about the show’s final episodes was how it called back to earlier in the series. We checked in to see what happened to two of Betty’s former loves (Henry and Gio) and her best friend Christina (who moved back to Scotland earlier in the show.) The mystery of Amanda’s paternity was finally solved. It seemed like all the living characters got a happy ending, with the potential of the future intact. The one character who got the short shrift was Tyler the child that Claire had given up for adoption that was fathered by Cal. Cal had been booted out of Meade and wanted nothing to do with Tyler as he had paid for Claire to have an abortion. If Matt, Betty’s former boyfriend and Tyler’s half-brother wasn’t volunteering halfway around the world, there should have been an interaction. We saw Tyler fall apart due to Wilhelmina’s lies, and that he didn’t go to prison for shooting her, but that was all. Since he was adopted the idea that he would even be eligible for money from the Meade family or Cal was not even really a factor.
Betty moved to London and got the career of her dreams at a magazine that has nothing to do with fashion. Daniel gave the reins of Mode to Wilhelmina, which had been her goal since the beginning of the show that caused her to do extremely immoral things. One could assume Daniel moved to London to see where things would go with Betty. Wilhelmina may soon be reunited with her beloved Connor, who she gave the tools to allow him to perhaps get an early release from prison. Claire stopped her boozing, murdering ways and became responsible. She and Wilhelmina may not be friends now, but they can co-exist. Amanda’s soap star father found her, and the two got along swimmingly. After leaving the reception desk behind, Amanda may have found her calling as a stylist. A question mark remained in regards to her potential relationship with Tyler. Marc realized he was good enough to have a monogamous relationship and perhaps was going in that direction with a former boyfriend.
Marc, Amanda and Betty were truly friends now. It wasn’t just about Marc and Amanda teasing her, but they were finally equals. Seeing them dance together at Betty’s going away party showed how much their relationship grew. Marc and Betty bonded over shared work goals, and later Marc, Amanda and Betty were neighbors. Marc was an amazing friend to Justin helping him deal with coming out to his overly supportive family. Austin, Justin’s first boyfriend, became a part of the Suarez family. Hilda got married to Bobby, a former high school boyfriend and her best friend. Bobby loves her and Justin. Ignacio finally got to be an empty nester as his two girls moved away.
Ugly Betty was a fun show even if at times its plot lines were outrageous and outlandish. The program had fashion, fighting and flair. Could it have continued for another year, most definitely, but it ended on a high note, which is very much appreciated.
