Likes and Yikes 2010 - Part 2 (GH, OLTL and Y&R)

I posted part one which featured my likes and yikes for AMC, ATWT, B&B and Days. Here is part two for GH, OLTL and Y&R. This is similar to the print edition of TV Guide and their famous Cheers and Jeers section and like that feature there are things that are seen as both likes and yikes. This is far from comprehensive, but lists the things that stood out for me most in 2010.

General Hospital

Likes: The scenes were Lucky found out about Nik and Elizabeth having an affair. Unfortunately this story stalled out, but I liked seeing how the sex between Nikolas and Liz influenced the entire family. It wasn’t just those three that were touched. Hopefully in 2011, we find out that Lucky is the father of Elizabeth’s youngest son Aiden.

Yikes: Lisa coming between Robin and Patrick. Let’s watch another character go psycho due to her former boyfriend. Robin left Port Charles to help in Africa and as she didn’t come home as quickly as expected Patrick slept with Lisa. My issue with this story was it was completely telegraphed. From the moment Lisa was introduced, I knew that Patrick would sleep with her causing strife in his marriage to Robin. Robin’s been nearly tossed out of the hospital as has Lisa. They should toss out the story, and move it on out, though I figure I won’t be that lucky.

Likes/Yikes: Sonny shoots Dante and then they find out their biological bond. Shooting a cop isn’t cool, shooting your son is even worse. Sonny had to deal with the guilt of his action, and the person who got a lot of the blame was Olivia. While keeping a secret like that was wrong, it is understandable that she did it. Unfortunately, Olivia didn’t tell the men before it ended with blood.

Likes/Yikes: Her boyfriend Kiefer abuses Kristina; she likes and says Ethan did it. Alexis kills Kiefer and again Ethan is blamed. This story entertained me until it just ended. After Kiefer was killed and Ethan was exonerated, there was this lull. Nothing happened and we had a couple more episodes in which Warren, Kiefer’s father goes crazy, shoots up the hospital and for once Mac plays the hero and kills him. Then the shooting was over, and that’s it. We had Kristina get nervous a couple times around a new classmate. All of this was traumatic, and yet nothing. So it was a like for what we got, but a yikes for how it was dropped off the map.

Likes/Yikes: Brenda’s back and spends weeks in “Rome”. The seemingly weeks where Brenda was on screen, but not interacting with the Port Charles characters was frustrating. While we should see where she was since she left, there was too much time spent on it. Even phone calls between her and Robin would have been better than just Brenda with new characters we didn’t know. It did improve once she was in Port Charles, but I just don’t know what to think about the story. I want to like it, but I can’t figure out what is lacking except the ghosts of the past lurking in the shadows.

One Life to Live:

Likes/Yikes: Fish and Kyle became a real couple and now we only hear about them once in awhile. I like seeing characters have happy endings, but how their story ended getting to raise Oliver’s son and then nothing more was frustrating.

Yikes: The cast turnover in the last year. While I can’t complain that they dumped long term characters, and I am thankful for that really I am. It was frustrating how many people were in the cast at the beginning of the year, but gone before the end. The aforementioned Kyle and Fish, Stacy, Kim, Mitch, Schuyler, Cole, Markko, Eli, Greg and Rachel. That’s 11 characters, which is a huge number of people to go. And it is possible I am forgetting some as well.

Likes/Yikes: Bo and Nora finally got married after years of being separated. While I was glad they reunited, I found it annoying that they already are in strife. Other than their wedding and one love scene, yes TPTB gave them a love scene. Praise be, they didn’t get to be together and happy.

Yikes: Jessica and Natalie both being pregnant and not being sure who the father of the fetus was. The only positive with this plot is that neither was pregnant with twins, seriously. And due to DNA test swapping, the paternities of these children are still not clear in 2011. I want to know already and find out if Brody is the father of both kids.

Likes: Finally Rex’s DNA mess is resolved while everyone in Llanview doesn’t know that Clint is Rex’s father, Clint does. Please let this not be changed again and let the rivalry between the two continue for as long as it can.

Likes/Yikes: Destiny finally getting a story and finding out Greg was her father. The only problem is I want to see her on camera divorcing her grandparents. Hopefully we get more in 2011 even if Greg is in prison.

Yikes: Blair finds love with Eli and he is a murder. She’s a murderer magnet. It seems like every man she sleeps with sans John and Cris are evil. Can she finally fall in love with someone who doesn’t have a criminal mind or murderous intent? Thank you.

Yikes: The summer return of David, which led to the weird quadrangle with Viki, Charlie and Dorian. I like David, but that story was bizarre. Viki takes David to bed, so Dorian walks in and gets jealous. Meanwhile Charlie and Dorian kiss to make David upset, this story for what it was just felt like a waste. And soon David was gone again, so Dorian and David had less than two weeks together. SIGH

Likes: OLTL did right by the fans of Starr and Cole as they allowed them to be together for a short time before he went away to prison. Hopefully he will not serve 10 years, so eventually Starr can deal with her daughter’s father.

Yikes: The Ford brothers have had a lot of press, as they are new and took up much airtime in 2010. My biggest issue other than how we don’t know these characters is that they are all the same type. I feel OLTL needs to give each guy more of a personality not one is a professor, one is in college and one is in high school. When you know one from another more from whom they are dating, there is a problem.

Likes/Yikes: Clint going evil and Echo coming back to Llanview. It was so weird to see Clint and Echo interact as I was having Guiding Light flashbacks, as Ross and Reva don’t act that way and if they had gone there on GL I would have been angry/horrified/repulsed even by the implication. It was shocking to see that the actors seemed to have sexual chemistry. When you are wishing for a scene in which the characters get so angry they have sex, it tells you something. The yikes is the fact that in character history Echo drugged Clint, they weren’t in love and now we are supposed to believe they had a relationship is frustrating. Also I fear that they are going way too far with Clint, and the character can’t come back from it. Having Clint know that Shane was his grandchild, but not lifting a finger while he had cancer was low even if Shane survived.

The Young & The Restless

Likes: The return of romantic comedy. Even if someone doesn’t like Victoria and Billy or Chloe and Kevin, as couples one thing I appreciate is that both couples have a romantic comedy slant. While it is a daytime drama, not all courtships are fraught with strife and seeing characters just like to be together in a nice change. Perhaps I will write about this more later, in the year.

Yikes: The twin, twin stories. I didn’t get back into Y&R until 2010 and I was hesitating due to the Lauren/Sarah and Patty/Emily. It didn’t make sense, so until their completion I ignored them. Then they bring Daisy back and I had barely an idea who she was due to fast-forwarding that much, which I find kind of sickly amusing.

Likes/Yikes: Jill’s a Fenmore; Tucker is Kay’s child and Liz Foster’s death. All of these things tie into each other and some parts I found more successfully done than others. Jill being a Fenmore at first was bad, but eventually it became interesting once Lauren and Jill started to nearly get along. Tucker being Kay’s child, sadly not much has come of it lately. During her health crisis as well as Murphy’s he has been sidelined, and shouldn’t he have been there. Liz Foster’s death led into the news of Jill’s paternity. I appreciated seeing Jill interact with her brothers and her mother in all the ways that count one last time.

Likes: Chance’s death due to having to go into the witness protection program after witnessing too much as a police officer. The scenes at the climax of this story were intense and entertaining. I appreciate that Chance is alive, and Nina got to mourn her son. Hopefully the issues with Ronan’s health bring this part of the story back into focus.

As always hope the soap operas get better this year than last, that we don’t have too many horrible losses. Having mainstream mentions is helpful, if they are done in a fun way, so I wish for more of those in 2011.
