Christmas in CBS Soapland 2010

This blog entry discusses “The Young and the Restless” and “The Bold and the Beautiful” holiday episodes of 2010. This year I was able to see two B&B Christmas episodes and the three Y&R shows.

This year on B&B focused on the formation of Dayzee’s a coffee shop Stephanie has bought to support her new homeless friends from skid row. This place used to be called Insomnia and was run by CJ Garrison. Stephanie had a party, in which her family and friends were invited. Also Brooke found her friend Anthony. He had been beaten up, his items stolen and his guitar broken. With Katie’s help, they got him dressed and cleaned up for the party at the coffee shop. Whip and Taylor had a cute mistletoe moment at the party. Stephanie also spoke to Taylor and said even with everything going on they were still bets friends. Ridge with Brooke’s prodding gave Anthony his prized guitar. At this party, carols were sung, Jingle Bells, which was the only song that Eric could play on the keyboard, and Anthony played the guitar while Dayzee sang Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. The last scene had Brad Bell, the executive producer giving holiday wishes to everyone. Friday’s episode especially was very much what I consider a traditional holiday show. We had singing and a group wave breaking the fourth wall. It reminded me of what used to be in soaps, which was cool.

This year on Y&R, they had two regular holiday episodes and one high concept show. The regular episodes had an events at all of these locations: Chancellor Mansion, Neil’s apartment, Daniel’s place, Michael/Lauren’s home, the Abbott abode, Billy/Victoria’s place and Crimson Lights. There were a lot of people involved and interacting. It seemed like some of the issues of the day were put aside for the holiday. The high concept episode was a take on “A Christmas Carol” with Victor Newman as Scrooge. On the first holiday episode, Jill felt kicked out by Kay and she spent it with Lily, Cane, Neil and the rest of their family including the twins. Before she left, Colin gave her a present. Heather was able to convince Ronan to go to the Chancellors. They made snow angels outside, and she “won” so he did what she wanted. Ronan doesn’t want to get close to Nina due to his liver problems, but I doubt Nina would feel that way and would treasure any amount of time she would have with her son. Paul was also glad his daughter showed up for Christmas Eve. Kevin and Chloe were still sparring due to her rebuffing him. Jana stopped by and Kevin invited her to stay to annoy Chloe. Tucker proposed to Ashley and she accepted. Daniel vowed again to get Abby back, though she is still plotting against Tucker’s involvement with her mother.

Other things that happened were: Reed was able to get to Genoa City even though it was snowing in Washington D.C. Victoria was thrilled to see her little boy, and the Newman clan spent the day at her house. Victor even showed up for a short time and stopped fighting for a moment with them. That only happened due to his visits ala A Christmas Carol. Diane and Kyle spent the day with the Abbotts on Christmas, though the night before Nick and Summer stopped by for a visit. Traci also came back to Genoa City for the holiday. Jill dropped off gifts to Lauren, Michael and Fen, and was invited to stay awhile with them. Daisy and Jana plotted.

Friday’s episode aka Victor’s Christmas Carol had Victor being visited overnight. He went back to the past. They showed clips of him with his mother Cora before she died as well as an old scene with Nikki. There were newly created scenes of Victor in the orphanage as Christian, how he was left at Christmas, and what it was like in that environment. His father played the Jacob Marley role, while his late wives Hope and Sabrina were the ghosts of Christmas past and present. An unseen Colleen was the ghost of Christmas future. In the present, we saw everyone enjoying the holiday, without Victor. In the future, Victor saw Nicholas turn into Victor after taking over the company, Victoria and Billy with another child whom he had never met. Jack and Nikki also had remarried, which made me cheer, as that would be truly something that would horrify Victor. Once Victor woke up, he changed his tune, gave his staff holiday bonuses and told them to go back to their families. He visited with the Abbotts and his children. He congratulated Ashley and Tucker on their engagement, hugged Traci, and allowed Diane the rest of the day off from work. At Billy and Victoria’s, he was civil with Billy, and gave presents to his children and grandchildren. The episode closed with Victor hanging out at home with his doggie pal.

I appreciated how Y&R had three holiday episodes this year. The issues of the day weren’t completely forgotten, but it wasn’t all out war. If someone who seldom gets to watch Y&R saw these, they would be able to figure out and catch up with what was going on in Genoa City.
