The re-introduction of Abby Carlton Newman on The Young and the Restless involved much nudity of the implied sort. The character suffered an extreme case of SORAS as the character was born in 2000 and is now around 21 years old. This has caused whiplash among some viewers, which I can sympathize with, as it is frustrating seeing someone grow up and out of sequence of characters that should be on screen peers. Instead of being a good sweet girl, all she wants is fame. While Abby is a rich girl, she differs from Marcy Rylan’s former role as the last Lizzie Spaulding on Guiding Light. Thankfully so far, the viewers have been spared a pregnancy story as that was her first major one on GL.
Abby’s dream in life is to become the star of her own reality show called “The Naked Heiress”. On her first day on screen, she flashed everyone at a press conference for Jabot. Her family believes she is acting out and doesn’t deserve her huge inheritance. Abby has money coming not just from her biological family, but also her adoptive father, the late Brad Carlton. Instead of going to school or doing what the family wants she initially teamed up with a guy named Kent to produce this show. Even with all the money in her name, she cannot access it so for now the show is a no go. She even sued her parents, but lost. Her Uncle Jack seems to want to help her, but as usual he has another agenda on his mind. Her Uncle Billy helped with her career as he put her on the cover of Restless Style magazine with Daniel, but the article had nothing to do with her. Victor though is not pleased and is acting much in the way he did back in the 1990s, when Abby’s half-sister posed for nude photographs. It is too bad they are not referencing that story. Briefly, Victoria took naked photos when she was upset with Cole, as they were together and she found out that her mom had also slept with him. Victor bought the magazine that printed the photos and destroyed the evidence as to not ruin her life. While the show has taken the time to compare Abby’s actions to Nikki’s (her father’s on/off again wife), they really haven’t gone for the Victoria/Abby parallel.
Since she is now all grown up, Abby now has a love interest, Daniel. He’s in the midst of divorcing Amber who has left Genoa City. At first, Daniel was skeptical like everyone else about what Abby was doing, but now seems to be on her side. She used him to promote her image. She took a video of them kissing, and had Kent post it. We weren’t sure if they did or didn’t have sex. Daniel modeled with her for the cover of Restless Style and kept her from doing an even more risqué image. They were intimate in his artist loft as well as in the barn with the horses. It seems that they skipped completely over Abby’s first time or else I am completely missing something and Abby and Daniel haven’t really had sex. It is weird to watch something daily and not be 100% sure which scene denoted their first time, as initially it seemed as if they did not have sex in the pool, but later it did.
Abby pulled other naked or nearly naked stunts. From going into the Chancellor Pool and filling it with bubbles on the 4th of July, staging a Joan of Arc re-enactment at a family club dinner (her horse is worth a million dollars so selling would solve her money problems), which sent her to jail for a weekend, to finally going to the opening of Gloworm and appearing in some lingerie. Does Abby have a need for attention, fame (as she says), and more riches or does she have exhibitionist tendencies? I really can’t tell. She finally stopped acting out for the sake of her family during the trial of her half-brother Adam who terrorized her mother allowing her to believe she was insane. Will this continue or is it the lull before the storm, as Jack helps her get her money?
The one story they really should do with the character is for her to find out the genesis of her existence. How Ashley and Victor weren’t involved at the time, and Ashley stole his sperm. Now that would be a good reason to have a great freak out, as who wants to find out that kind of news. Thinking about it just gives me shake my head in disgust as what were the powers that be thinking when they came up with that plot. Ashley isn’t the villain of Y&R, so that kind of behavior seems extreme beyond words. That would also be an out for Victor and Ashley to give her money to keep her quiet. Conceived by a mother who stole her former loves sperm, Abby Carlton is a poor little rich girl. See how she navigates her life dealing with the knowledge of her genesis. The father who raised her is dead, as is the woman who she called her sister. Now she must deal with being part of two of the most powerful families in Genoa City, the Abbotts and the Newmans. If that doesn't sound like a potential reality show idea, I don't know what is. And that concept doesn't involve nudity, so I find it funny that Abby felt that was needed for her to get the attention to her proposed show as her life is truly made for television.
