This week on Days of Our Lives, Hope Williams Brady went on trial for muggings and attempted murder. She attacked acquaintances, friends and family while in state induced by sleeping pills. Pleading guilty, she was given a couple of years in the county jail to be rehabilitated.
Hope and Bo have been the on and off sweethearts of Salem for over 25 years. In 1990, she was presumed dead. With much difficulty he moved on emotionally to other women including Dr. Carly Manning, who had recently returned to Salem needing help. Bo felt alienated by Hope as she left him and took their daughter Ciara. Hope moved them into Victor’s mansion and left Bo alone in their home. Protecting Carly was something that Bo could do as his life was in shambles. Carly had killed her husband Lawrence. He was abusive and had threatened to murder the daughter she gave up for adoption as she was conceived during a one-night stand during her marriage to him. This child was Melanie who is now an adult, living in Salem and couldn’t stand Carly. For her safety, Melanie was not told her true identity. Carly shot Melanie accidently as Lawrence’s Aunt Vivian tried to kill Melanie to hurt Carly. Bo tried his best to protect Carly. They developed romantic feelings again and became intimate. Was it wrong for Bo to move on so quickly from Hope? That’s a matter of opinion, but it was Hope’s choice to stay away from Bo.
It can be argued that Bo and Hope’s problems started much earlier than their physical separation and before Carly was back in the picture. Yes Ciara being kidnapped caused Hope to spend time away with their daughter. Their relationship though has been dealt serious blows for many years. Here are some highlights of their problems in no particular order. Hope had an affair with another man Patrick Lockhart, who at first was thought to be Ciara’s father. Hope thought she was Princess Gina and slept with both John Black and Stefano Dimera and became pregnant. Eventually the show changed course and altered the paternity of the child conceived at that time and made him Bo’s progeny. This child Zach was killed by Chelsea, as she ran over her half-brother (Chelsea’s mom is Billie.) who was Bo’s kid with Billie. Bo and Hope survived a lot of things, but how much could one marriage take. It was the perfect storm for Bo and Hope to become involved with new people.
While living with Victor at the Kiriakis mansion, Hope became close to Justin, who is Bo’s cousin. The two have been friends for years, but never were involved romantically. Justin fell for her, but Hope still loved Bo. To investigate Vivian, she and Justin kissed. This horrified everyone including Bo. During this time, Hope began using sleeping pills to be able to rest. In no order, Hope attacked the powerful men of Salem by hitting them from behind. There was District Attorney Woods, Justin, Mayor Abe Carver, EJ Dimera, Brady Black, Roman and finally her husband Bo. These people all had relationships with Hope as they were either people she dealt with as an attorney or had a familial relationship of some sort. As the time went on Hope’s crimes increased in intensity. Hope didn’t mug Bo, but drugged him and tried to set him on fire. Dr. Baker who had been working as her accomplice, though he came to care for her called the cops before Bo was killed. Baker helped Nicole switch babies Grace and Sydney and had faked his death. He wasn’t a good person, but was good to Hope. Baker had no idea that Hope was using pills. In the hospital, Hope tried to murder Bo again. During the daytime, Hope accused Adrianna of the muggings. She was freed eventually, but the damage was done to her relationship with Brady. Baker had framed Adrianna for the crimes as Nicole was blackmailing him.
The person who was hurt the most due to Hope’s behavior is Ciara. Ciara found a treasure box under Hope’s bed. It was a box full of wallets of the men who nighttime Hope mugged. The only person who believed Ciara was Theo, Abe and Lexie’s autistic little boy. It was kind of crazy that with all the people in Salem involved in law enforcement the ones who cracked the case were two children under the age of 10. Bo finally believed the kids and nighttime Hope attacked him yet again. He got her talking on camera about her crimes.
So is Bo really the one who caused all these problems? He chose Carly over Hope, after Hope pushed him away repeatedly. He wants to do right by his family, but it is doubtful he could have ever guessed Hope would have such a reaction. Becoming a criminal due to sleeping pills is not something that is probable when a couple is in the midst of a legal separation. Bo should stand by his family, but is he going to put his life on hold for the duration of Hope’s stay in prison. Should he, will Hope be a different person once she is released? Hope and Bo during their separation need to discover themselves as individuals IMO if they are to make their relationship work in the future. If they decide to reunite, it should be because they want it and not due to their family.
