OLTL: GL Alum Kim Zimmer joining OLTL for a Short Stint

In today’s soap opera news, Soap Opera Digest has announced that Kim Zimmer who is best known for Reva Shayne on Guiding Light is rejoining One Life to Life in her former role of Echo that she last played over 25 years ago. She’ll be in a story with Dorian, Viki and Clint among other characters. Supposedly this will be a limited run, but we do not know the duration of her stay yet.

Normally I don’t blog about casting news before there is more information and I usually post my reactions on message boards, but this one I felt the need to comment about today. My initial reaction was shock and OMH are they going to put Kim Zimmer and Jerry verDorn together in romantic scenes. OMG that is so hilarious. Reva and Ross no blanking way, I can’t believe OLTL is going there. This leads me into my secondary reaction, which was a memory to the Guiding Light event in Connecticut that I attended back in March that I still haven’t written about on this blog. (The fact I haven’t written about it makes me a horrid procrastinator, which I fully acknowledge, at least in this time I have written about other topics.) Someone in the audience threw the question about why didn’t GL have Reva and Ross date? Kim referenced her time on OLTL and mentioned how in the past the character that JvD plays now of Clint, had slept with her character of Echo. Jerry made a quip about necrophilia, if that were to happen which was in reference to how his GL character was lost in a plane crash. Fortunately or not, when I think of the idea of Kim and Jerry acting together on OLTL I think of that word.

The big questions for me are this beyond how long is KZ staying are:

  • Will anyone watching these scenes that have familiarity with Guiding Light actually see Echo and Clint and not exclaim Reva and Ross? After close to five years, some see him as Ross first, so will this exacerbate that issue?

  • What kind of relationship will the characters have? In the past, the characters were lovers and the back story had Clint also having sex with her mom, which happened years earlier off screen. Obviously this relationship happened when the late Clint Ritchie was playing the part.

  • If there is any sort of sexual component will Kim and Jerry actually have that kind of chemistry? Then again does that matter, as sometimes chemistry from one show doesn’t translate to another anyway.

That said looking back, while Kim and Jerry time on GL overlapped, the characters seldom were in the same story. The last significant plot the two had was in 1997 during an umbrella story. Ross had been appointed to be the district attorney. At the party announcing the news, Annie Dutton fell down the stairs. Reva was blamed for pushing her and later charged with attempted murder of Annie and her dead fetus. Due to his new job, Ross had to prosecute his friend Reva for this crime. He didn’t want to do it as he felt Reva wasn’t guilty, but had to proceed with the case. In court, Ross discovered his somewhat estranged wife Blake had been blackmailed by Annie to hurt Reva. Finding this out, Ross turned the tables on Annie and with cruel cold precision destroyed her on the witness stand. The prosecutor was out for blood even if it meant he would lose the case because Annie had put the screws to his wife. She admitted that Reva didn’t cause her pregnancy to end. Reva was freed and could resume her relationship with Joshua. Other than that Reva and Ross mainly saw each other at group functions like weddings and parties.

With a bit of luck the story whatever it is and however long it lasts is a good one. The idea that we are finally getting material that may not be of the comedic nature for Clint, Dorian and Viki is good news. This is the closest I’ve felt to optimism when it comes to OLTL in a very long time. Anticipation can be a tricky thing, which can lead to disappointment. I hope that this will not be the case and it isn’t some overhyped joke that lasts for a couple of episodes.
