In honor of June, it seems like I’m going to be writing a lot about soap weddings. Here are my thoughts on latest wedding on The Young and the Restless.
While in Jamaica, Billy Abbott and Victoria Newman got married. The nuptials weren’t based on love, but drunken silliness. They were shocked they actually wed on the beach. Of course, after the fact they were told that due to the time of day the ceremony was held it wasn’t legal.
Before it was announced that the wedding wasn’t legitimate the news got leaked by Abby, who is Victoria’s younger sister and Billy’s niece (though they are not related biologically). Billy had kept a copy of the ceremony on his computer, and she downloaded it to her phone. Victoria’s former husband J.T. was upset as what it says about her commitment to their child, that she would go off and get married to Billy. Chloe wasn’t happy about the idea of Victoria being a stepmother to Delia her child with Billy. It is one thing to remarry, but another when children are in the picture. Victor, Victoria’s father was disgusted by the whole situation as well. While the Newmans and the Abbotts are rivals in business, they do come together at different times of trouble. Billy as the black sheep of the Abbott family has problems being accepted even by his loved ones. Finding out the wedding wasn’t true, didn’t make anyone less angry with Victoria and Billy, but it saved them the legal work to get an annulment.
What was interesting was that it seemed that Victoria and Billy liked being married to each other, even if everyone else was horrified. Finding out the ceremony wasn’t official, didn’t make them seem relieved, but sad even if neither would admit that to the other. Then perhaps it could just be an issue where they both feel like outcasts and it is nice to have someone who also feels the same way or it could be as simple as they both enjoy the sex.
I’m not sure who we supposed to sympathize with in this situation. Their former love interests J.T. and Chloe were troubled over the quickie ceremony and wanted to protect the children. While they may have felt Victoria and Billy’s actions were cringe-worthy, I’m not sure I feel the same way. Victoria and Billy did something crazy, but since both were single they were free to get married. If Victoria and Billy decided to wed to get custody of the kids or in an act of revenge, my opinion would have been different. The question does remain will Billy and Victoria develop real feelings or was the time in Jamaica just a bit of crazy drunken fun.
