Y&R: Hilary's Death

Below are my thoughts about the continuing story of Hilary's (Mishael Morgan) death on "The Young and the Restless" as the character perished on July 27, 2018.

Hilary and her baby died due to injuries sustained in a car accident. Lily (Christel Khalil) didn't see the truck coming and ran a red light. Lily had been livid that Charlie and Shauna were alone together, assumed they had sex, and Shauna ran out, so they tried to find her. Charlie and Lily were both fine, but Hilary's injuries were too severe though she spent a few days hanging on in the hospital. Devon (Bryton James) wanted to make his last moments with Hilary special. They got remarried, and she wore a Fenmore's gown - also they did the something borrowed, something blue etc. The wedding was small as only family, Mariah, Phyllis, Jack, and her ward Shauna were in attendance - and later at the funeral mainly it was the same principals. The simple ceremony did not lack for emotion, as the couple loved each other. Hilary figured out she was dying, as Phyllis couldn't lie to her best friend. Everyone else knew, and it hit them hard.

Mariah had to continue the show without Hilary, first when she didn't know Hilary would die, and then after she passed away telling the audience. We didn't see an actual funeral, though we saw everyone gather together afterwards. Hilary left a note explaining how she felt about the people closest to her in life. During this, Shauna couldn't lie anymore, and shared that Lily caused Hilary to die. Lily had blocked it out, and didn't realize she was responsible. Devon was crushed, as an accident he could handle, but not his sister killing his wife and child.

The scene where Hilary died was poignant, as she mentioned how she got some things right in life. Hilary was a conflicted character, and could be her own worst enemy. That said, she tried to be and did become a better person.

When it comes to the character's death, well they could have shipped her off in a coma, but I get why they would kill her for emotional impact. Of course, the whole situation about why Mishael decided to leave, is one that has upset a lot of people. (Five years, no salary increase, so I can't blame her for deciding to try her luck elsewhere. I hope we get to see her in another program soon.)
