On Monday, March 3, 2014 Emmyonline.org posted the 41st annual drama performer pre-nominations. The final nominees will be announced on May 1, 2014. This year the winner will be decided based on who got the most votes during this round. Below is the list and my thoughts on those who were included this year.
Outstanding Lead Actress
Sharon Case (Sharon, Y&R)
Jessica Collins (Avery, Y&R)
Eileen Davidson (Kristen, DAYS)
Finola Hughes (Anna, GH)
Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke, B&B)
Kelly Monaco (Sam, GH)
Alison Sweeney (Sami, DAYS)
Heather Tom (Katie, B&B)
Jess Walton (Jill, Y&R)
Maura West (Ava, GH)
Laura Wright (Carly, GH)
Arianne Zucker (Nicole, DAYS)
Out of the twelve people who made the balloting round: three are from "The Young and the Restless", three are from "Days of Our Lives", four are from "General Hospital" and two are from "The Bold and the Beautiful". Last year's winner Heather Tom is in this category, and it wouldn't be impossible that she'll win again (making it her third lead actress award). Five of the actress were in this category last year.
Outstanding Lead Actor
Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH)
Peter Bergman (Jack, Y&R)
Doug Davidson (Paul, Y&R)
Roger Howarth (Franco, GH)
Christian Jules LeBlanc (Michael, Y&R)
John McCook (Eric, B&B)
Jason Thompson (Patrick, GH)
Billy Miller (ex-Billy, Y&R)
James Scott (EJ, DAYS)
Shawn Christian (Daniel, DAYS)
Last year's winner Doug Davidson is up for the award again. Out of the ten people who made the balloting round: three are from GH, four are from Y&R, one is from B&B, and two are from Days. Seven of the actors listed got the pre-nomination in this category last year. Billy Miller won in the supporting category, while Shawn Christian was pre-nominated in supporting, and while James Scott wasn't pre-nominated last year, he had been in the past.
Outstanding Supporting Actress
Tracey E. Bregman (Lauren, Y&R)
Melissa Claire Egan (Chelsea, Y&R)
Jane Elliot (Tracy, GH)
Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis, GH)
Amelia Heinle (Victoria, Y&R)
Elizabeth Hendrickson (Chloe, Y&R)
Lisa LoCicero (Olivia, GH)
Kimberly McCullough (ex-Robin, GH)
Kelly Sullivan (ex-Connie, GH)
Cynthia Watros (Kelly, Y&R)
Last year's winner Julie Marie Berman is no longer at GH, and didn't submit. The count is five for Y&R and five for GH. Last year actresses from B&B and Days were in this category (Katherine Kelly Lang and Ari Zucker, but both are now on the ballot for lead.) What I appreciated is at least the majority of the actresses in this category are actually supporting players on GH or Y&R and not lead actresses trying to play the game to get an Emmy.
Outstanding Supporting Actor
Robert Adamson (Noah, Y&R)
Bradford Anderson (ex-Spinelli, GH)
Blake Berris (Nick, DAYS)
Sean Blakemore (Shawn, GH)
Darin Brooks (Wyatt, B&B)
Steve Burton (Dylan, Y&R)
Scott Clifton (Liam, B&B)
William deVry (Julian, GH)
Wally Kurth (Justin, DAYS)
Eric Martsolf (Brady, DAYS)
Greg Rikaart (Kevin, Y&R)
Greg Vaughan (Eric, DAYS)
Dominic Zamprogna (Dante, GH)
Thirteen actors were nominated, and some of these are rather surprising. Three are from Y&R, four are from GH, four are from Days, and two are from B&B. Last year there was a tie in this category, but Billy Miller put his name in lead, while Scott Clifton could still possibly repeat. The name that surprised me most was Wally Kurth as he's not on contract at Days at this time.
Outstanding Younger Actress
Kristen Alderson (Kiki, GH)
Camila Banus (Gabi, DAYS)
Linsey Godfrey (Caroline, B&B)
Christel Khalil (Lily, Y&R)
Hunter King (Summer, Y&R)
Kate Mansi (Abby, DAYS)
Kim Matula (Hope, B&B)
Kelley Missal (Danielle, OLTL)
Ashlyn Pearce (Aly, B&B)
Denyse Tontz (Miranda, AMC)
Last year's winner was Kristen Alderson, though she won the award for playing Starr Manning and not Kiki Jerome. There are 10 pre-nominees this year instead of 9 and it is the first category that includes actors from the rebooted All My Children and One Life to Live. The breakdown is one for GH, AMC, and OLTL, two for Days and Y&R, and three for B&B. While I was glad that the AMC and OLTL actresses were included I was most surprised by Christel Khalil as it was said that she was no longer going to submit in the younger actress category after she won in 2012.
Outstanding Younger Actor
Corbin Bleu (Jeffrey, OLTL)
Bryan Craig (Morgan, GH)
Chad Duell (Michael, GH)
Max Ehrich (Fenmore, Y&R)
Adam Gregory (Thomas, B&B)
Chandler Massey (ex-Will, DAYS)
Casey Moss (JJ, DAYS)
Eric Nelsen (AJ, AMC)
Daniel Polo (ex-Jamie, Y&R)
Freddie Smith (Sonny, DAYS)
Chandler Massey won this award the last two years, and this year there are 10 pre-nominees. There are two actors from GH and Y&R, three from Days, one from AMC, B&B, and OLTL. No real surprises except I was glad that the AMC and OLTL actors were included in this category.
Congrats to everyone who made it on the ballot.
This blog is mainly about soaps, though it will sometimes veer into other topics. The main purpose is to provide a space for when board discussion isn't enough as sometimes my thoughts and feelings take on a life of their own. Even if some of the shows I enjoy have been cancelled, I will continue to post about them. They may take away the shows, but they can't destroy the love.
