Days: Hollywood 4th of July Episode

Today Days of Our Lives did a special episode for July 4th. Instead of it following normal continuity, a group of characters were talking about movies in the Brady Pub.

Rain caused the cancellation of a parade. The roads were closed, the power was out and everyone on the episode was stuck at the Brady Pub. There was no Internet and the movies that were downloaded on Will’s computer couldn’t be played, as he had no battery power. Roman was in LA on police business due to a murder, and that was played for laughs as well. We knew he was in California as he was outside with the Hollywood sign shown in the distance. Ciara felt like a drowned duck, as she was unhappy about missing the parade. The show ended with Chad and Abby talked about this holiday being forgotten in the future.

The movies the show parodied five of the ten Oscar nominees from the last award cycle. They were “True Grit”, “Black Swan”, “The King’s Speech”, “The Fighter” and “The Social Network”. So they skipped over “Winter’s Bone”, “Inception”, “Toy Story 3”, “The Kids are All Right” and “127 Hours”. Kinsey, Chad, Abby, Will and Gabi were all sitting at a table together. None of them had seen all the movies. Abby felt frustrated over the sexism in these films and perhaps if they had discussed the others she would have not been annoyed by the content.

The “True Grit” parody starred Bo and Melanie. Was the show teasing a potential future pairing for Melanie and Chad, as he seemed to talk positively about her? The best part for me of that parody was Melanie saying he had the patch on the wrong eye and why does he need one. Bo said his best friend has a patch. Hello random shout out to Steven Earl Johnson!

The “Black Swan” parody starred Maggie and Hope. There were references to ice-skating as Hope was a skater and not to ballet. Maggie was Hope’s mom in this and she made her a cake. After throwing it in the trash, Hope took it out and ate it. I’ve seen this movie, and that was just odd. I would have parodied the part about how the main character was told how she was unable to be bad. As the R-rated part that the group talked about is not something they would ever show on a daytime soap.

The King’s Speech parody was with EJ, Nicole and Roman. Instead of teaching EJ how to speak proper English of people like Sir John Gielgud, he had to learn how to become a loutish American. Nicole and EJ had to go into witness protection and he would be spotted way too easily if he acted British. EJ was stuck in a tacky shirt, and it was very much an exercise in cognitive dissonance seeing him try to be someone else. Eventually EJ became a stereotypical ugly American and Roman gave him a thumbs up in approval.

The Social Network parody had Chad play the Facebook creator. Justin was his lawyer, and Adrienne was on the other side. Both the Kunitz twins (they share the role of young Johnny) were camera at the same time as the twins in the movie. Chad made a comment that they are cuter than him. That was the thing I liked best seeing the little boys together. Since I haven’t seen the movie, I didn’t get all of the references discussing it or during the fantasy.

The Fighter is about real life boxers in New England. This starred Brady as the fighter and he kept his shirt off the entire time. He also had wounds on his face. Nicole was his bedmate, and Adrienne played his mom. We also met all of his sisters. That was crazy as most of the female cast were in blonde wigs including Maxine, Ciara, and Maggie. At the end, Brady and EJ are together and it is revealed they are brothers. This is one I haven’t seen either, so I apologize for the lack of detail.

Whether one loved or loved this episode, it was a change of pace. If nothing else it allowed actors to potentially interact with people they don’t play scenes with on a regular basis.
