Right now Days of Our Lives is filming the new episodes that air going to air in late September. This push with new producers, new writers and returned performers signals a sea change for the program. Warning: this post includes both spoilers and speculation.
They finally confirmed that Deidre Hall (Marlena), Drake Hogestyn (John) and Matthew Ashford (Jack) are back on Days. In the last week, we also got news that Patrick Muldoon (original Austin) and Christie Clark (Carrie) will be back as well. Since Abby was recast with Kate Mansi after Matthew Ashford was off of Days and Patrick Muldoon never worked with Lauren Koslow as Kate, it will be interesting to see if they have a connection with their “family members.”
From my last post on the topic, two additional people were let go Francisco San Martin (Dario) and Tamara Braun (Taylor). Francisco has completed taping while Tamara is still working. Bren Foster (Quinn) was fired and rehired. Crystal Chappell (Carly) and Louise Sorel (Vivian) have already taped their last scenes. Nadia Bjorlin (Chloe) will be done very soon.
On September 26 (according to spoilers mentioned on twitter), there will be a big event. Yesterday a lot of people were working. The number that was mentioned was 41, which is even a large number back in the old days. Of course, I wonder how that will touch the budget. Now that kind of thing is sort of unheard of it will be interesting to see how it looks.
The date of September 26 of course is significant for more than one reason. That’s the first day that All My Children will not be airing on ABC. In many markets Days and AMC compete for viewers. By having a splashy event, it looks like Days is trying to get people to watch. It is also the second show of the new writing team, and the returning performers are going to be airing. The episode airing on September 23 is supposed to be their first, but it is a special. We have yet to get more information on that.
What is frustrating is while some of us are looking forward to these changes it is still weeks away. I don’t want to wish away summer, but we have a lot of material to sit through before getting to the new stuff. Taping so far in advance does have its disadvantages and we are running into that right now. It is hard to be optimistic and keep up the enthusiasm when you are more than two months from airing. Personally I wish that Days would come up with something fun to bide the time. It is sad that some viewers are getting more entertainment from reading twitter than watching the on air program.
In the coming weeks, hopefully we will get some additional information on the characters that are leaving and how they will go. This at least will help pass the time. At least, the publications will have articles saying goodbye and welcoming back the cast members. Hopefully they will give background information for viewers who don’t know the returning people as well.
