Y&R: The Tornado

I was not overly excited over the recent tornado on The Young & The Restless. Stunts such as this should advance story, but I wonder how much did this event really moved along when it came to plot or if it influenced anything when it came to characterization. That's the point of this summary to see if it really changed the status quo in Genoa City.

When the news of Y&R having a tornado story came out, my first thought was what are they thinking? Does Wisconsin have tornados often? Looking on the web, it seems like there was a destructive one back in June of this year. Depending on how far in advance Y&R comes up with story, it may or may not have been a factor. Also as someone who catches Y&R on Soapnet meaning I don’t see the program in high definition a lot of the scenes were extremely dark. That made it difficult to follow the action.

The main character who was most injured by the tornado was JT He was trying to help Lily, Cane and the babies. Unfortunately for JT, he was electrocuted after getting in a one-car accident. Cane rescued his friend, but he was unconscious and his heart stopped. Mac admitted her love for JT and her hopes for their future along with their unborn child. Even if she has been scared, she loves him enough to marry him. What I did appreciate was finally JT and Victoria acted like adults when it came to their son, Reed and their past. While they have both found love with other people, they should try to get along solely due to Reed.

Tucker and Diane had sex and while Abby and Daniel were looking for her mother discovered them afterward. Even if Tucker and Diane’s activities meant nothing, and Tucker and Ashley are not very serious, this will put a cramp in that relationship. Ashley believed Tucker that nothing happened, but who knows if that will come up again to hurt them later, which would be a logical step in the story.

Sharon drove Adam home and they abandoned the car due to a weather alert. In a barn, Adam shielded Faith and saved her. Sharon and Adam’s relationship is twisted for good reason, but in the real world obviously she would have nothing to do with him. Nick found Sharon, Adam and Faith, and Adam was brought to the hospital. After finding out what Adam did, Nick told Adam to stay away as he and Sharon are trying to be a family.

Meggie used the storm to get closer to Victor. A tree went into the window at the Newmans and she acted hurt. Nikki stayed away and drank some more with Deacon, who was faking falling off the wagon. Will Meggie and Deacon succeed in their plan to separate Nikki and Victor or not? The storm really didn’t change things either for any of them.

A simple rainstorm and a blackout would have been sufficient scenario to advance the plot the way they did. I have no idea why they took the effort to do a tornado. So Kay could mention Brock who was off canvas, so Nina would have a reason to interact with Ronan and mention that Chance is alive, so Ronan could have a scene with Heather sans shirt? I’m not complaining about any of these things, but I’m not sure. They didn’t even use it to trash some sets they plan never to use again. Of course, part of this could be my bias as it is doubtful that anything with a tornado even with the most high tech special effects will ever beat the wonder I felt watching the movie “The Wizard of Oz” as a child.
