GL: Matt's History a Mystery to himself

On Friday, September 26, 2008, GL gave us a Matt Reardon sighting. Well, seeing Matt was great, but he must have selective amnesia. Then again, this allows me to travel down memory lane, which in this case isn't a bad thing at all.

Dinah and Ashlee talked to him at the gym. Ashlee mentioned how the Reardons owned Company. Matt's response was it was before his time.

Anyone who watched GL back in the 90s should remember that while Bea Reardon no longer lived in Springfield, the boarding house and Company didn't belong to the Coopers. This only happened after Susan (as Daisy was called at the time) burned down the diner on Fifth Street. After losing Meals and Wheels, Buzz bought the boarding house and Company--from Nola Reardon, Matt's aunt.

What is worse is that when Matt came to town, his sister Bridget was living at the Boarding House and running Company. It wasn't some far-flung relation, but his little sister. There was a mention at one point that Matt had visited his Grandma Bea in Springfield as a child. This was years before Company was in existence.

As it is, Matt lived in the Boarding House prior to marrying Vanessa. Dinah did for a short time as well. For the record, I don't expect any performer to remember all the details of the life of a character, but this was a blunder.

One of the most memorable for me at least with Matt and Vanessa scenes took place there.

Cue my way back machine...

Flashback 1995, Springfield was a large corporate city

Dinah had returned to Springfield as she ran out of money while living in Europe. She started fooling around with Roger Thorpe, stealing money, faked a kidnapping that became real and was causing problems for those around her. To the chagrin of Vanessa and Ross and just about everyone else (including Blake, Matt and Dinah's best friend Marcus) Dinah wouldn’t end her toxic relationship with Roger Thorpe. Roger having lost Holly to Fletcher just wanted to have some fun and if he hurt people in the process so be it, as there was no way he was going to become best friends with Ross or Vanessa. Holly was the only one who came close to getting through to Dinah.

So on the night of Roger and Dinah's engagement party at the Lakeland Country Club, Dinah was going to marry Marcus instead of Roger. Roger told Dinah he didn't want her trust fund, which she would get if they got married. He'd given up Blake and Peter to be with her as well. Dinah thinking he actually loved her wed Roger. The wedding license name was changed, and in disgust Matt, Vanessa, Ross and Blake left the ballroom.

After leaving, Matt and Vanessa went back to Matt's room at the Reardon Boarding House. The strife they had over Dinah's problems wasn't worth ruining their relationship. They made love, and if I remember correctly broke the bed (checked the old GL summary archive and the bed breaking wasn't mentioned, which is the reason for this note.) Most people remember where they have lived in the past and where they had wild sex. Then again they later made Matt a male "escort" so this kind of behavior may have been normal.

It was a getting it on episode so to speak, as Ross and Blake went back to the Carriage House were intimate too. The two acts of love plus afterglow were used to contrast the sham of a marriage between Roger and Dinah. They consummated their vows, but Roger fell asleep before they could talk. In frustration, Dinah nearly threw an alcoholic beverage on his head to wake him up from his slumber.

So even though it was annoying that they got that detail wrong, well at least it threw my mind into flashback mode, which is a good thing.
