OLTL: The Fall of Buchanan Enterprises - Who is to blame?

Dorian staged a hostile takeover of Buchanan Enterprises giving the company the new moniker of Cramer Enterprises. Even if she acted alone in her revenge, certain situations gave her the opportunity to succeed.

So who is to blame? The easiest answer would be the decision makers who created and/or approved this plot after Phil Carey declined to appear without a contract as Asa Buchanan, since the takeover is fallout from Asa’s death. Including Dorian’s actions, what else lead to the downfall of the house of Buchanan?

Asa – If he had kept his hands to himself and not gotten Emma Bradley pregnant (with the 1968 plot this is in question, but who knows), there would be no missing child for Jared to impersonate. He put his trust in Nigel, who didn’t share the knowledge with the family.

Nigel – The loyal butler/manservant is guilty as he kept Asa’s secret. If he had opened his mouth, upon Asa’s death, the rest of the family would have had to deal with David, but wouldn’t have to deal with Jared’s deception. Yes, the family would have been horrified, and for good reason, but they won’t be happy about Nigel betraying them for an impostor. He helped fake the DNA test using David's hair. For now, Jared and Natalie have kept Nigel’s name out of it. Nigel may have done the wrong thing, for a good reason, but that doesn't mean his actions happened in a bubble.

David – He’s to blame, because he’s David Vickers. The Buchanans just don’t like the charming conman. He may have done the right thing, by giving Jessica part of his liver, but he wanted to be paid $10 million in return. While much of the family was at the ranch in Texas for the reading of Asa’s will, David ended up having some fun with Dorian, since Dorian spied Clint kissing Nora. Finding a guy in your woman’s bed is bad enough; finding out that man is your long lost brother is even worse, so Nigel kept quiet. Years earlier, he pretended to be the Lord heir, which is ironic as he is a Buchanan one instead. Will David ever find out his father's identity, who is to say?

Clint - He got romantically involved with Dorian, which was a big mistake in the sense that if he hurt her, revenge would be on her mind. The relationship ended badly after Dorian spied him kissing Nora in the stables while in Texas. Later when Dorian tried to explain, he wouldn't hear it and she had planned to tell Clint about Jared being a fraud. Clint also used shady means to hold onto the company. While saving the company, he weakened it as he destroyed the people who had tried to steal BE. He also accepted Jared too easily once Jared saved Jessica from falling at the Palace Hotel.

Natalie - She lied about Jared not being a Buchanan and allowed him to perpetuate the fraud against the company. Natalie enlisted Viki's help when Calvin Jenkins tried to take over the company, which was a good thing, but she didn't tell Bo and Clint about it. She also didn't share Jared's past with Jessica/Tess.

Viki – On the surface, how is she to blame? The Dorian and Viki rivalry is one of soap legend. Dorian’s original motivation was hurting Clint, Viki’s former husband. Natalie asked for her aid after Calvin Jenkins tried to takeover Buchanan. She was successful, but Natalie and Viki didn’t share this information with Bo and Clint. If Bo and Clint knew about that Dorian was behind what Calvin did, they may have been able to do something to stop her.

Jessica/Tess - As Tess, she picked Jared up, went to bed with him and then left items stolen from the casino in the room. Jared spent two years in prison due to her, so he has a good reason to want revenge. Once Jess and Tess were integrated, she should have shared this information about Jared with the family.

Jared - He lied about being a Buchanan, and any business deals he was involved in as a Buchanan were now void. He used David's hair in the DNA test. Jared wanted to hurt Jessica/Tess due to being incarcerated for two years using the vineyard as a weapon against her and Nash.

Bo and Nora - As the police commish (until Valentine's Day) and the district attorney, they should have done more in regards to their feelings for Jared being a fraud. When Clint was using Lindsay's information to stop Cobb and Webster, they should have seen how this was weakening the company and not focus upon Clint's moral character.

Nash - When Jared appeared wanting to hurt Jessica, he should have involved Bo and Clint. Natalie and Jessica talked him out of taking this action.

Sarah - She knew about Jessica/Tess being involved with Jared, and kept her mouth shut.

Charlie - He kept Jared's lies due to the guilt he felt for being an absentee and alcoholic father.

Renee - She believed in and supported Jared before he perpetuated his fraud. Renee invited Jared into the Buchanan fold by asking him to stay at the Buchanan mansion.

Pamela Stuart - She helped Jared perpetuate the lie, and was the proof (outside of the fake DNA) of his past. Pamela also started Jared's "obsession" with the Buchanans when she shared stories of Asa and the rest with him.

Cobb and Webster - They were the men that Dorian used to attempt to takeover the company before enlisting Calvin Jenkins. After finding out their dirty little secrets, Clint went after them weakening BE.

Jenkins - He went after Buchanan Enterprises as Dorian became a major shareholder in his corporation. Viki helped him out to get Dorian off his back and stopped the attempt to take over company.

Max Holden and Alex Olanov - Nigel told Max about the Buchanan heir, and Alex overheard the conversation. Both kept quiet, Max due to his friendship with Nigel and Alex due to Nigel giving away his inheritance from Asa.

Dorian - Since she used all of the above to her advantage and took over BE, she is to blame. Everything fell into place for her and she got the company for her own. It was never explained exactly how she was able to get so much BE stock.

Regardless of which characters one may blame, a lot of people were responsible for the fall of Buchanan Enterprises and the rise of Cramer Enterprises. Just about everyone in this plot has paid for their misguided decisions, from the Buchanans losing the company to Dorian alienating her family.
