GH: Laura's Return, was the Joke on us?

Lulu began to lose her mind due to killing Logan Hayes in self-defense. While on the run with Johnny, Logan continued to haunt her. Johnny risked his freedom to bring her back to Shady Brook a mental institution in Port Charles. He was thrown back in jail and tried for Logan's murder, though a jury of his peers, which included Epiphany and Edward Quartermaine, found him not guilty.

Meanwhile back at the institution, Lulu had to suffer alone or so she thought as her mother Laura began to speak with her. When Lulu brought Nikolas and Lucky to visit their mom, it was revealed that Laura was just a huge delusion created by Lulu to cope with her circumstances. So was the joke on us?

In this plot, was Lulu representing us the viewing audience or at least those who miss the old days? Lulu is so out of her mind, that she believes her catatonic mother is getting well again. So are those who feel like General Hospital is a better place with characters like Laura Spencer crazy just like Lulu? Is anyone who wishes that the program has more non-mob related material deluded?

On screen, they did say that perhaps Lulu's mind projecting Laura was her subconscious way to help her heal. Laura said the things that Lulu needed to hear, but she wouldn't believe from anyone else. That Lulu was a victim of Logan and that it wasn't her fault that he was dead as he was attacking her.

It is true that Genie Francis was only going to be on screen for a short time, so from the beginning we should have known it was a trick. Would it have been better to leave well enough alone and kept Laura in an uncommunicative state than to do the fake-out tease with Nikolas and Lucky? While it was nice to have scenes with Laura and her daughter Lulu, it was frustrating that we didn't see have any real interaction between Laura and her sons.

Would it have been that difficult to have Nikolas and Lucky see their mother in their dreams for example. It is understandable scheduling-wise if Laura and Luke didn't see one another if Tony Geary was out of the United States while this material was being taped.

As viewers, should we just be happy to see the character of Laura? It isn't as if GH is going to bring Genie Francis back full time. General Hospital could have just had Lulu talk to a photograph and not use Genie at all or have no mention of any parallels between Lulu's situation and her mother's life.

On paper a story using the history of a parent to illuminate the life of a child and showing the generations is something a traditionalist viewer would want to see. So a plot using Laura's past and tying it into her daughter's Lulu's situation is a good way to go. It is just unfortunate there was no easy way to expand Laura's reach to the lives of other characters that love her.
