This isn't going to be about who should have been nominated, but my thoughts on those who were chosen. Granted some performers I know little or nothing about, and I'll cop to that when I get to them as I don't watch anything on CBS daytime regularly except for GL. What is kind of sad is that only one episode (two if it is B&B as it is a 30 minute show) is all that was used to judge any performance. Just about any actor on any show with a dash of talent can eke out at least one good episode a year. And like last year there was only one round of voting, which stinks as people who didn't choose one of the five people nominated in a particular category really had no vote.
When I first saw the nominations my gut reaction was please let an actress from an ABC soap win an award this year. After last year's complete shut out of women from ABC daytime, I hope someone from that network takes the gold. It has been over 20 years since someone from Days has gotten an Emmy win, when Billy Warlock got a younger actor award back in 1988. It is kind of depressing that there are some soap fans who never saw anyone from Days ever get an award.
The award I'm happiest about is the Lifetime achievement honor going to Sesame Street. As someone who has the two Old School Sesame Street DVD sets along with the three seasons of The Muppet Show, this would obvious.
The outstanding drama series, directing and writing nominees were the following: AMC got all three, Days got show and directing, Bold & the Beautiful got show and writing, One Life to Live got directing and writing and GH got just writing. For 2008, OLTL got the Director's Guild Award and As The World Turns got the Writer's Guild Award and they weren't even nominated in this category by the Emmy voters. Bold and the Beautiful has never won best show, All My Children hasn't gotten best show since 1998 and Days hasn't won since 1978. So regardless of which program gets it, it will be a long time coming. Days' submittal though was when Ed Scott was in charge which I find kind of awkward due to how things ended.
Lead actress: Debbi Morgan AMC's Angie, Maura West ATWT's Carly, Susan Flannery B&B's Stephanie, Susan Haskell OLTL's Marty and Jeanne Cooper Y&R's Katherine. All these actresses have Emmys at home for the roles they were nominated for this year. Both Debbi Morgan and Susan Haskell have supporting actress emmys from 1989 and 1994 respectively. I'm rooting for Debbi Morgan due to her episode choice when Angie and Jesse reunited which was such a tearjerker. Unfortunately not much information is available as to what episodes were submitted so shot in the dark.
Lead actor: Thorsten Kaye AMC's Zach, Peter Reckell, Days' Bo, Tony Geary GH's Luke, Daniel Cosgrove GL's Bill and Christian LeBlanc Y&R's Michael I'm rooting for anyone other than Tony Geary of Christian LeBlanc it isn't that they aren't talented, it is due to the fact they've been the two people who've had a lock of this award since 2004, with Geary winning in 2004, 2006 and 2008 and LeBlanc in 2005 and 2007. Let's show someone else a little love.
Supporting actress: Melissa Claire Egan AMC's Annie, Alicia Minshew AMC's Kendall, Julie Pinson ATWT's Janet, Tamara Braun Days' Ava, Bree Williamson OLTL's Jessica I saw all the actresses in this category perform last year other than Julie Pinson who I've enjoyed on every soap she's been on except for ATWT as I don't watch it regularly. They would be all first time winners, which would be cool in some ways. I see Alicia and Bree as more lead actresses than supporting, but that's just how it goes.
Supporting actor: Vincent Irrizary AMC's David, Jacob Young AMC's JR, Van Hansis ATWT's Luke, Bradford Anderson GH's Spinelli, Jeff Branson GL's Shayne I've seen a bit of Luke on ATWT, but not the episode that was submitted. Both Irrizary and Branson both were not on their shows an entire year and I wasn't surprised by their episode choices. Spinelli is such a unique character, so I am not sure how Bradford Anderson's reel would be interpreted by voters. Jacob Young is the only previous winner in this category though his golden girl in younger actro came from his time as Lucky on GH.
Younger actress: Meredith Hagner ATWT's Liberty, Rachel Melvin Days' Chelsea, Kirsten Storms GH's Maxie, Julie Berman GH's Lulu, Emily O'Brien Y&R's Jana Julie Berman would have had a great reel from 2007, but wasn't nominated. I think both Rachel Melvin and Kirsten Storms have grown as performers in their years in daytime.
Younger actor: Cornelius Smith Jr. AMC's Frankie, Blake Berris Days' Nick, Darrin Brooks Days' Max, EJ Bonilla GL's Rafe, Bryton McClure Y&R's Devon Only Bryton has won in the past. A lot of people seemed stunned by EJ Bonilla's nomination, but the episode he submitted was decent. Frankie is one of my favorite characters on AMC and it would be kind of strange to see someone from Days finally win again if it was a performer that is no longer with the show as both guys have left daytime.
Hopefully this year's Daytime Emmys which will be on the CW as the big three passed on them will be entertaining. I do not want a total sweep by any show or network, so all of us in the viewing audience can perhaps be happy about at least one of the wins.
This blog is mainly about soaps, though it will sometimes veer into other topics. The main purpose is to provide a space for when board discussion isn't enough as sometimes my thoughts and feelings take on a life of their own. Even if some of the shows I enjoy have been cancelled, I will continue to post about them. They may take away the shows, but they can't destroy the love.
