On Friday, January 23 John and Marlena waved goodbye to Salem. Was it for good? We shall see.
Unfortunately John could only wave goodbye in a metaphorical sense as he was paralyzed. He and Marlena were going to Lugano, Switzerland to treat his spinal cord injury. John getting his memories back for a few scenes and a remarriage is not a happy ending. It was just an ending and not a good one.
Watching those scenes what went through my mind was if I didn't know the actors were let go, would I have realized that was it? Would I have thought they were just going on vacation or had another gig and were going to be written out temporarily? The answer to that is yes. It was so underwhelming that unless I saw their names disappear from the credits, I would have never guessed it was the end.
Even with such a lackluster write off, is that better than none at all? They could have just disappeared and only be mentioned again on screen months later. That kind of ending is disgusting in another way as the average viewer (unless they read the credits) would have no idea that the particular character has been written off and the actor will no longer appear on screen.
Whether or not someone continues to watch Days after this is a personal decision. It depends on the reasons behind their viewing. Even if someone continues on it doesn't mean that a bad taste wasn't left in their mouth.
The one smart thing Days did on the episode following John and Marlena's write off was having Bo and Hope along with Patch and Kayla talk about John and Marlena leaving town. It looks as if they will get a story now. If a show discards one part of its veteran cast, it is a good idea to focus upon another part of it. That way perhaps some will stay interested in the show.
I wish Drake Hogestyn and Deidre Hall good luck in their careers. Whether one loved John and Marlena or loathed them, the characters and their pairing gave a lot of people many years of enjoyment and discussion.
