Books on TV: Boob Tube

Thanks to Soap Opera 451 for the book suggestion entry. Here is a direct link to their entry on it. Boob Tube is a 2010 ebook novel by Mark and Lesleyann Coker. The story takes place in LA in the soap opera industry. The plot is fictional, but inspired by real life.

Reading this novel was a new experience for me, as I had to download Amazon's Kindle to read this free story. I've read books online before, but never in such a program. I sort of get the appeal, but I prefer my paper books as if something goes wrong you only lose the cost of a book and not a piece of electronic equipment.

Boob Tube follows the life of the newest cast member of the soap opera Tranquility Bay, Gina Martin. She's a recast of the popular young character Jasmine Everett. Gina was a former Hershey Chocolate employee, which made me wonder if the authors wanted the readers to covet a sweet treat while reading this novel. Gina has to deal with the pitfalls of being in daytime television. Rivalries with co-stars, stress on the set, the press, fans and agents all come into play.

The other main character Jason, the in-house publicity guy for the soap opera. He is the one person who seems to be "normal" in comparison to the rest of the people we meet in the story.

It felt like the behind the scenes stories were more interesting than what was happening on Tranquility Bay. Even in fiction, the soap story was less complex than the lives of the cast members. Affairs, sex scandals, drugs, crime and the like were all part of the plot. Some of what happened in this novel, would never be on real world soap opera unless it aired on cable.

There ware twists and turns, but the story ended abruptly. I found it interesting especially trying to figure out who the characters in the novel were based upon in real life. If someone has a free afternoon and wants a fairly quick and free read, they may want to download this ebook.
