As someone who recently completed the seventh and last season of Gilmore Girls on DVD, I was thinking about its inclusion on Soapnet and the show in general. While I find it to be serialized in nature with continuing stories and cliffhangers, I'm not 100% against its inclusion as part of the network's programming schedule. That said, if it was my channel it would be a very different kind of station. While I'd try to make revenue, I'd at least spend a few hours a month on classic soap programming that doesn't fall into the category of Ryan's Hope reruns, not that they aren't enjoyable, but to provide variety to the audience.
Gilmore Girls is a good show to have on your schedule if someone is in flip around mode, as they may stop changing channels when they recognize the program. I preferred watching it without advertisements on DVD as in syndication or runs on cable episodes may be ran out of order. So how does it fall into the soap realm and why would someone like it?
The show focuses on Lorelai and her daughter Rory Gilmore who live in Stars Hollow, Connecticut. Lorelai became pregnant at sixteen with her daughter Rory, who at the start of the series was sixteen. Through the seven seasons, both women grew while their relationship was tested, by the boys and/or men that entered and/or exited their lives, wellmeaning friends, and especially Lorelai's parents, who missed watching Rory grow up due to Lorelai's conflict with them. Rory dreamt of an Ivy League education and the easiest way to get that was going to a prestigious private school called Chilton. Needing money to pay for Chilton, Friday night dinners were born in which Lorelai had to bring Rory to her estranged parents' home, so they could get to know one another. Through the seasons, the meals showed the conflicts among them as Rory ended up getting along much better with Lorelai's parents than she ever did.
Rory had three major love interests through the series, Dean and Jess in high school and Logan through college. Lorelai was torn from her past with Christopher, Rory's dad and Luke the owner of the diner in town. Rory's best friend in Stars Hollow was Lane, a drummer with a very religiously conservative mother. At school, she and Paris became best friends though at first they were rivals.
The colorful characters of Stars Hollow rounded out the cast, from Lorelai's best friend Sookie and her husband Jackson, the annoying town selectman Taylor Doose (who also owned the market), Kirk who had seemingly thousands of jobs including postman, Miss Patty the dance instructor and Babette their neighbor.
If one likes an unconventional family drama with fast paced dialogue, Gilmore Girls may be the kind of show for you. With seven seasons to watch it could be a good show to invest in during rebroadcasts as most of the characters and stories are wrapped up during the final episode.
