Lost track of time and hadn't gotten a chance to comment on the Daytime Emmy pre-nominations. I'm one of those people who finds these awards fascinating and likes to see what the industry feels is worthy of honoring.
Nearly every year, there are changes made to the Daytime Emmy process. This year as far as I can tell there were changes in two major areas. The first was that people who are pre-nominated get to select only one episode as their submission. The second was how the pre-nomination balloting takes place. In the past, only people who are members of a particular cast could vote for other members of their cast, and at some shows the bosses decided who got to be on the ballot. This year a program could suggest who the cast voted for (and if those people get pre-nominated the fee to be on the ballot is waived), but anyone could put their name into the nomination pool. Also any actor could vote for any other actor to receive a pre-nomination even if they were not on the same program, which allows the opportunity for actors who may not be as popular with their cast to get on the ballot if they are liked within the industry.
The pre-nomination process is something that is unique for daytime, and was started after some shows would seldom get nominated. This way if every show could only have two (or three if there was a tie) people on the ballot, in a category--that this would allow more variation on the honored people.
Now onto the pre-nominees. Just a note due to Guiding Light's cancellation most actors on that show decided to ignore the Emmy process. One topic that typically comes up in discussions of soaps is the whole issue of lead versus supporting in the categories, and while I find that an interesting discussion there is no way I could sufficiently cover that topic. Also I am not going to try and guess who will get nods. When that information comes out, I won’t even guess who I think will win.
Outstanding Lead Actor Pre-nominees:
All My Children, ABC
David Canary, as Adam & Stuart Chandler
Thorsten Kaye, as Zach Slater
Vincent Irizarry, as Dr. David Hayward
As The World Turns, CBS
Jon Lindstrom, as Craig Montgomery
Michael Park, as Jack Snyder
The Bold and the Beautiful, CBS
Don Diamont, as Bill Spencer, Jr.
John McCook, as Eric Forrester
Days of Our Lives, NBC
John Aniston, as Victor Kiriakis
James Scott, as EJ Dimera
General Hospital, ABC
Maurice Benard, as Sonny Corinthos
Anthony Geary, as Luke Spencer
One Life to Live, ABC
Jerry verDorn, as Clint Buchanan
Robert S. Woods, as Bo Buchanan
The Young and the Restless, CBS
Peter Bergman, as Jack Abbott
Doug Davidson, as Paul Williams
The Lead Actor category feels like it is in a time warp. Move certain actors to different programs and change the character names and it looks very different. Switch Don Diamont from B&B to Y&R, Vincent Irrizarry from AMC to GL, Thorsten Kaye from AMC to OLTL, Jon Lindstrom from ATWT to GH and Jerry verDorn from OLTL to GL. With those switches it looks like a potential ballot for both the lead and supporting categories from the 1990s. Other than arguably Kaye and Irrizarry, the former show they were on, would be their signature part. Yes I know John McCook and James Scott were on Y&R and AMC in the past, but neither would be considered their signature or most well known part. Everyone in this category outside of James Scott has more than a decade in the daytime industry. It doesn't seem that the pre-nomination process helped with allowing any new people to be on the ballot.
Outstanding Lead Actress Pre-nominees:
All My Children, ABC
Bobbie Eakes, as Krystal Carey
Alicia Minshew, as Kendall Hart Slater
As The World Turns, CBS
Terri Colombino, as Katie Snyder
Maura West, as Carly Tenney
The Bold and the Beautiful, CBS
Susan Flannery, as Stephanie Forrester
Katherine Kelly Lang, as Brooke Logan
Days of Our Lives, NBC
Kristian Alfonso, as Hope Brady
Alison Sweeney, as Samantha (Sami) Brady
General Hospital, ABC
Sarah Brown, as Claudia Zacchara Corinthos
Laura Wright, as Carly Jacks
Guiding Light, CBS
Crystal Chappell, as Olivia Spencer
One Life to Live, ABC
Erika Slezak, as Viki Lord Banks
Hillary Smith, as Nora Buchanan
The Young and the Restless, CBS
Jeanne Cooper, as Katherine Chancellor
Michelle Stafford, as Phyllis Newman
Sharon Case, as Sharon Newman
Like the lead actor category, there could be a slight time warp with this list. For fun we could switch around some names as well: Bobbie Eakes (due to her time on B&B as Macy) would be moved from AMC, Sarah Brown (change Claudia to Carly though keep her at GH), and Laura Wright (change Carly to GL’s Cassie).
Once you look at the supporting categories things begin to change. Many of the actors listed in supporting are younger or at least haven’t been in daytime for 15 or more years. I find that kind of odd in a way, as if one watches soaps a lot of the time the younger performers carry much of the story. Also the supporting categories sometimes pull performers who “aged” out of the younger categories, but aren’t ready for the lead ones. Last year’s winners (who were tied) in the supporting actor category: Jeff Branson and Vincent Irrizarry, only appeared on their respective shows for part of 2008. People who appear in a limited capacity or a short term in a role tend to be placed in supporting as well. When I think of the supporting category what comes to mind are character actors and comedic performers. The secondary leads also fall into this group as while they carry story, their plot may not have been the primary story of a particular year.
Outstanding Supporting Actor Pre-nominees:
All My Children, ABC
Ricky Paull Goldin, as Jake Martin
Jacob Young, as JR Chandler
As The World Turns, CBS
Trent Dawson, as Henry Coleman
Austin Peck, as Brad Snyder
The Bold and the Beautiful, CBS
Brandon Beemer, as Owen Knight
Kyle Lowder, as Rick Forrester
Days of Our Lives, NBC
Shawn Christian, as Dr. Daniel Jonas
Joseph Mascolo, as Stefano Dimera
General Hospital, ABC
Bradford Anderson, as Damien Spinelli
Jonathan Jackson, as Lucky Spencer
Guiding Light, CBS
Jeff Branson, as Shayne Lewis
One Life to Live, ABC
Mark Lawson, as Brody Lovett
Brian Kerwin, as Charlie Banks
Brett Claywell, as Kyle Lewis
The Young and the Restless, CBS
Billy Miller, as Billy Abbott
Greg Rikaart, as Kevin Fisher
The supporting actor category has a lot of soap hoppers, but most of the actors don’t have the daytime soap longevity as the lead category performers. Out of the 16 actors listed, only six haven’t had significant roles on a soap that isn’t the one they are being pre-nominated for in 2010. This is a good reminder of how incestuous soaps can be. Ricky Paull Goldin has been on Y&R, GL, before joining AMC, Jacob Young was on B&B and GH. Austin Peck, Brandon Beemer, and Kyle Lowder are Days alums. Shawn Christian was on ATWT, Joseph Mascolo was on B&B. Jeff Branson and Billy Miller were on AMC, Brian Kerwin was on Y&R way back. And no I didn’t need IMDB to remember all of that, which I don’t know if that makes me feel good about my memory or slightly freaked out about it.

Melissa Claire Egan, as Annie Chandler
Chrishell Stause, as Amanda Dillon

Guiding Light, CBS
Beth Chamberlin, as Beth Raines Spaulding
Tina Sloan, as Lillian Raines
One Life to Live, ABC
Ilene Kristen, as Roxanne Balsom
Bree Williamson, as Jessica Brennan
The Young and the Restless, CBS
Stacy Haiduk, as Patty Williams & Dr. Emily Peterson
Elizabeth Hendrickson, as Chloe Mitchell
The supporting actress category has a lot less soap hoppers, and is more of a wide open race. Just about everyone pre-nominated has yet to win an award, and in many cases as never been nominated for an Emmy. This is the category I am most interested in seeing whom will be chosen.
The younger actor and actress categories now represent performers in daytime who are 25 or younger. If a person turns 26 within a particular year, they can be nominated, but can only submit scenes that took place before their birthday. At times due to the limited amount of people in a cast within this age group, there are nominees that are confusing. In the past, this category had a lower age limit, but that was changed years ago, as the pool was way too small. The one thing that is difficult about these categories is judging talent as the material is so varied. Due to how this category works, sometimes a person who had barely any screen time or story gets a nomination and goes on to win.
Outstanding Younger Actress Pre-nominees:
All My Children, ABC
Brittany Allen, as Marissa Chandler
Shannon Kane, as Natalia Hubbard

In May, the Daytime Emmy Nominations will be announced. Hopefully by that time, we will have a location and station to watch the awards. It is doubtful that most people want to find out the winners via a press release or an internet broadcast.
This blog is mainly about soaps, though it will sometimes veer into other topics. The main purpose is to provide a space for when board discussion isn't enough as sometimes my thoughts and feelings take on a life of their own. Even if some of the shows I enjoy have been cancelled, I will continue to post about them. They may take away the shows, but they can't destroy the love.
