Love in the Afternoon - Valetine's 1983

GSN gave us soap fans a gift this past week, with the rebroadcast of five Family Feud episodes with 20 daytime stars from the 1980s. The competitors were five men and five women from both of the casts of All My Children and General Hospital. Within this blog entry are spoilers of what happened on these episodes.

The list of the performers is in the order of how they stood at the team podiums. The AMC men team consisted of Darnell Williams (Jesse), Louis Edmonds (Langley), Richard Van Vleet (Chuck), Mark LaMura (Mark) and Larry Lau (Greg). The AMC women team consisted of Ruth Warrick (Phoebe), Marcy Walker (Liza), Debbi Morgan (Angie), Dorothy Lyman (Opal) and Julia Barr (Brooke). The GH men team consisted of Stuart Damon (Alan), Kin Shriner (Scott), John Stamos (Blackie), Steve Bond (Jimmy Lee) and Brian Patrick Clarke (Grant). The GH women team consisted of Robin Mattson (Heather), Loanne Bishop (Rose), Emma Samms (Holly), Bianca Ferguson (Claudia) and Jackie Zeman (Bobbie). Up until these episodes, which aired in 1983, players from AMC had raised $31,361 on Family Feud, and GH had earned $9,730.

The AMC teams were playing for the League school for Seriously Disturbed Children, which is in New York City. The GH teams were playing for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation due to Stuart Damon’s son who had recently been in a diabetic coma (in 1983 time).

On the first day, the AMC men played against the GH women. The men won definitively. Mark and Darnell played fast money and got $5000. The most interesting survey question asked during the game was: name something people are always doing on a soap opera.

1. Crying 26
2. Affair/Adultery 23
3. Getting Divorce 19
4. Dying 7
5. Kissing 6

What was amusing was the actors didn’t think of numbers 3 and 4, though the guys thought of dying, but said having babies instead.

On the second day, the GH men played against the AMC women. The men won again. Stuart and Brian played the fast money and won $5,000. What was funny was how the women in the audience would scream especially for John Stamos who was 19 at the time of the taping of the show. The most amusing (at least to me) responses though came when the following question (paraphrased here) was asked during fast money: name a real animal you see in a scary dream. Stuart said a monster; Brian said a dragon.

On the third day, the AMC men played against the GH men. The AMC team won and made another $5,000 for their charity. The one question that cracked me up as there is no way it would be asked today was: what would a liberated woman do on a date which would surprise the man she was seeing. Number one was pay, number two was drive herself or drive them, number three was go braless, number four was make a pass, number five was open the door for him. Richard and Larry played fast money.

On the fourth day, the AMC women played against the GH women. The AMC team won. Julia and Dorothy played fast money getting the $5,000. The most humorous thing was the question name a television network. Julia said ABC, and then said she had to say that, as she didn’t want to lose her job. It got 55 points, when Dorothy was asked the same question she said ABC, was beeped, said sorry and then NBC. These episodes of Family Feud aired during ABC daytime, so if ABC hadn’t been the number one answer, I would have been very surprised.

On the fifth day, the AMC men and GH men played again, as they had won the most money of their respective teams. Instead of going for $5,000 in fast money, the winning team would have a chance at $10,000. GH won that game. Stuart and Brian played fast money again. When asked the question name a vacation state, Stuart misspoke and said Miami, but thankfully corrected himself and then said Florida, and Brian said New York.

At the end of the last show, all the performers surrounded Richard Dawson who announced that the General Hospital team had won the competition. They only have five trophies to pass out, so only half the cast got them that day. Supposedly they still needed to be engraved as well. In money earnings, All My Children though was victorious, by $20. During these five episodes, General Hospital earned $16,297 and All My Children earned $16,317.
