GH: Lulu Dante La Bohème

General Hospital’s Lulu and Dante (otherwise known as Dominic) went on their first date this week. Dante lived up to his promise of taking her to the opera, even if Lulu hadn’t remembered his vow.

Lulu started to fall for Dante even if his swagger and overconfidence bothered her. He took care of her when she was drugged and he saved her when she nearly drowned. Dante seemed smitten upon meeting Ms. Spencer. He flirted with her shamelessly, and she literally has his life in her hands. Lulu knows that Dante is an undercover cop and Olivia’s son. That news could get both of them as well as Olivia into serious trouble. Mob organizations tend not to like people who infiltrate them.

Dante was good for the Spencer family as well, as he was the first thing that Lucky and Ethan could agree upon, as he was not good enough for their sister. Once Lucky realized that Dante was Dominic, though Lucky began to support Dante, and felt he was good enough for Lulu.

After spending Christmas together with her family, Dante and Lulu, who were decked out in their finest clothing went to New York City. They took the train from Port Charles to a limousine, where they were taken to the opera. The duo saw La Bohème, by Giacomo Puccini, which is performed in Italian.

It was surprising seeing how long General Hospital spent discussing an opera on screen. We didn’t see the couple at the opera house, and only in the limo. They spoke of Mimi and how she died of consumption. Unfortunately, Mimi died before she and her beloved Rodolfo could spend their lives together.

Watching this my first thought was I couldn’t believe I am watching two characters on GH discussing opera that aren’t villains. A lot of times in soaps, it seems the only characters that like or listen to classical music are those who are criminals and/or are people we are supposed to root against. It is refreshing to see the opposite to be the case this time.

The once skeptical Lulu saw the opera and was blown away by it. Dante and Lulu shared their first real kisses, which were interrupted as their ride to the train station ended.

Once everyone in town finds out about Dante’s true identity and how Lulu hid it from her friends, things may change in their relationship. Will family bonds, mean more to Lulu than her new boyfriend?

Since Lulu and Dante saw a tragic opera, was this in some way foreshadowing to the future of their relationship? That remains to be seen, but hopefully the story will continue on throughout the Port Charles canvas. Lulu choosing to protect Dante’s secret, may negatively impact her cousin Carly and her family as two of her sons are Sonny’s children. And what of the secret that Dante doesn’t know about himself, that he is trying to nail his very own biological father, Sonny, who is a major mob kingpin.

This story can continue on for the coming months, and even years, as the fallout could be epic. The mobster with a cop as a son, a son with a mobster as a father, and how if ever they are able to come to peace with one another.
