Books about TV: TV Tie-Ins

"TV Tie-Ins" is a scholarly work that explores the evolution of paperback books that were written about particular programs. Written by Kurt Peer, it features both the history of these books (until 1990) along with a master list of every book that was found within this genre. Since this was published in the late 90s, all of this research was a lot more difficult to come by compared to how it could be done today.

Dallas on TNT: J.R.'s Masterpiece

On Monday, March 11, 2013, Dallas on TNT aired the episode focusing on the death of J.R. Ewing (Larry Hagman). This episode not only continued the plot, but was also a tribute to Mr. Hagman who passed away after a long battle with cancer in late 2012.

TV on DVD: Knots Landing Season One

For this long Memorial Day weekend, I took the opportunity to view the first season of Knots Landing, which I purchased on DVD earlier this year during the WeLoveSoaps sale. I've watched very few episodes of this series, so I was going in with little or no expectations. What follows is my summary and thoughts about about the Dallas spinoff, which used to air on SoapNet.

AMC: Susan Lucci's Memoir

This week I took time out to read Susan Lucci’s memoir All My Life, which was co-written with Laura Morton. The over 300-page book had some interesting tidbits. In this entry I am going to share some of it and my other thoughts on the book.

Glued to the Set: 90s Book with Daytime Soap Section

This is my summary of the daytime soap section of book Glued to the Set by Stephen D. Stark. This nonfiction book focuses on 60 shows and events that made us who we are today, and is from 1997. This part focuses on All My Children though it is not solely about that program. In the book, they actually say that they contemplated having it being about General Hospital or Guiding Light instead. The chapter on soap operas is called All My Children, Soaps and the Feminization of America.

SOD: Insider's Guide the Secret Life of Soaps from 1988

I was looking through my old soap opera magazines and came upon this particular issue from October 4, 1988 of Soap Opera Digest. While this issue is the regular size, it states it is a special issue as it features those things that make “soaps so unique and so much fun.” I wanted to explore these items and see if they are still prevalent in soaps today. At the end of this entry, I will summarize some of what else is in this particular issue.

Chicago Website with Soap Opera Archive

Normally, I don't write about websites, but I was surfing and stumbled upon the site for the Museum of Broadcast Communications. Currently, the museum is closed and scheduled to be reopened in Spring 2011. This entry will mainly focus on their soap opera information.
