Thoughts on the Emmy Pre-nominations 2012

Here are my thoughts on the pre-nominations. The biggest rule change was performers had to submit a two minute clip to be judged on to get past this round, and people would not get an automatic prenom if they were the only person from a particular show in that category.

Looking from the original ballot to the pre-nomination list, the list was cut from 106 to 61. (Last year it was 142 people to 80, as there were automatic bids and one additional soap opera that was eligible As the World Turns.)

Usually the final tally of nominees is around 30. This is the last year of eligibility for All My Children, and the last full year for One Life to Live. In 2012, OLTL only aired nine episodes, so it would be rather surprising if they netted any wins and/or nominations for that year. The people on this list will get to pick a full episode to be voted on (with B&B getting two as it is a 30 minute program.) The judges will screen the material at home and this one round will determine the nominees and final winners. While that is not my favorite style of judging, nothing I can do about it.

The Lead Actor category started with 16 names which have now been cut down to 11. Days of Our Lives was shut out of this category though two actors submitted tapes. At most three people from any particular show asked to be voted upon, which I think is reasonable. The pre-nominees for AMC and Y&R were completely different than last year. Everyone listed was part of their program for the entire year, and had story, so no one with a two month stint is going to win.

Outstanding Lead Actor Pre-Nominees:

All My Children: Vincent Irizarry (David) and Darnell Williams (Jesse)
The Bold and the Beautiful: Don Diamont (Bill) and John McCook (Eric)
General Hospital: Maurice Benard (Sonny) and Steve Burton (Jason), Tony Geary (Luke)
One Life to Live: Jerry verDorn (Clint) and Robert S. Woods (Bo)
The Young and the Restless: Michael Muhney (Adam) and Stephen Nichols (Tucker)

The Lead Actress category started with 18 names which have now been cut down to 10. No show was cut out in this category. Jeanne Cooper was off for part of the year due to her health and Crystal Chappell lost her job at the end of her contract so neither was on the full year.

Outstanding Lead Actress Pre-Nominees:
AMC: Debbi Morgan (Angie)
B&B: Susan Flannery (Stephanie) and Heather Tom (Katie)
Days: Crystal Chappell (Carly)
GH: Laura Wright (Carly)
OLTL: Kassie DePaiva (Blair) and Erika Slezak (Viki)
Y&R: Jeanne Cooper (Kay), Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki) and Michelle Stafford (Phyllis)

The Supporting Actor category started with 21 names which have now been cut down to 10. The cast of GH got the most prenoms, but they also had the most actors submitting at eight. The other shows had two or three actors submit two minute reels. This category is very different than last year as the majority of the actors listed were not on the ballot. AMC, B&B, Days & OLTL had different actors listed.

Supporting Actor Pre-Nominees:
AMC: Michael E. Knight (Tad)
B&B: Scott Clifton (Liam)
Days: Matthew Ashford (Jack)
GH: Bradford Anderson (Spinelli), Sean Blackmore (Shawn), Jonathan Jackson (Lucky) and Jason Thompson (Patrick)
OLTL: John Wesley Shipp (Eddie)
Y&R: Billy Miller (Billy) and Greg Rikkart (Kevin)

The Supporting Actress category started with 26 names which have now been cut down to 10. (Last year, 40 actresses wanted to be prenominated, and only three were from the late ATWT.) No one from B&B made the cut in this category. What is interesting, of course is how Debbi Morgan got prenominated for both AMC and Y&R.

Outstanding Supporting Actress Pre-Nominees:
AMC: Melissa Claire Egan (Annie)
Days: Nadia Bjorlin (Chloe) and Arianne Zucker (Nicole)
GH: Julie Marie Berman (Lulu), Rebecca Herbst (Liz) and Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis)
OLTL: Gina Tognoni (Kelly)
Y&R: Debbi Morgan (Harmony), Genie Francis (Genevieve) and Elizabeth Hendrickson (Chloe)

The Younger Actor category started with 12 names which have now been cut down to 10. AMC did not have anyone in this category. Days and GH had the same people as last year.

Outstanding Younger Actor Pre-Nominees:
B&B: Adam Gregory (Thomas)
Days: Casey Deidrick (Chad) and Chandler Massey (Will)
GH: Chad Duell (Michael) and Nathan Parsons (Ethan)
OLTL: Eddie Alderson (Matthew) David A. Gregory (Ford), and Austin Williams (Shane)
Y&R: Bryton James (Devon) and Kevin Schmidt (Noah)

The Younger Actress category started with 13 names which have now been cut down to 10. OLTL had potential prenominees, but no one made this ballot. All four actresses from Days that were in this round made it to the next one. (This category was influenced a lot by the rule change.)

Outstanding Younger Actress Pre-Nominees:
AMC: Natalie Hall (Colby)
B&B: Jacqueline MacInnes Wood (Steffy) and Kim Matula (Hope)
Days: Camila Banus (Gabi), Molly Burnett (Melanie) Shelley Hennig (Stephanie), and Kate Mansi (Abigail)
GH: Lexi Ainsworth (Kristina) and Haley Pullos (Molly)
Y&R: Christel Khalil (Lily)

As of this posting, there isn't going to be a broadcast for the Daytime Emmy Awards in 2012. So I guess we will find out the nominees and eventual winners through the web. Hopefully at least some performers from different shows will be represented in the final awards. To see a PDF version of the list click here.
