GH: The Bus Crash

Here are my thoughts and a brief summary on the General Hospital Bus Crash. There were some things that were okay about it, but others that made me shake my head. This post is through the current episodes, so any later repercussions that may have been mentioned in spoilers are not discussed making this is a safe read for the spoiler-free. I’ve avoided reading commentaries so any similarities are a coincidence.

Steve took his nephew Cameron on the ski trip and was the chaperone as the chief of staff. Cameron was the youngest person on the bus and sat with Morgan. Considering the bad blood between Elizabeth and Carly, I liked that as maybe someday the two could be pals. Alexis gave her permission for Molly and Kristina to go. Is Kristina 18 yet, if she is the show didn’t celebrate her birthday on camera, so I have no idea if she was technically seen as a person who could be responsible for her younger sister. Michael got permission due to his legal status, but would have skipped the entire thing to spend time with Abby, though she convinced him to go. Taylor who is sort of dating Kristina was also there. Kristina invited Ali (spelled that way in closed captions), to try and set her up again with Michael though neither teen was interested in dating the other. The only other hospital staff member was Matt, who asked Maxie to go with him. Olivia went in Carly’s place as a chaperone and flirted with Steve. She convinced Steve toplay his guitar and sing on the bus, but more about the song he performed later. Everyone on the bus joined in, and it sounded like a group of non-musical people singing together in an impromptu manner. They didn’t suddenly become a show choir, which I did appreciate.

Once the bus crashed, the driver died quickly, and everyone else we saw was conscious. Olivia had serious injuries and only Steve tending to her by getting her to talk about Dante kept her alive and fighting. Kristina ended up with hypothermia, Ali had a bump on her head, Matt broke his arm, and Morgan his leg. If anyone else was hurt, we didn’t see it, though there was a line about people going to Mercy for treatment. When the survivors were in the ravine at the mountain, we saw worried people in Port Charles waiting for news. The only reason they knew about the crash was a phone call from Morgan to Carly prior to the accident. There were nice scenes between Alexis and Sam, though Jax who has a helicopter wasn’t even mentioned until everyone made it to GH. While waiting for news on the kids, Sonny met Abby. He knew she was a stripper, and discovered she was a friend of Michael’s unlike Carly he had no issue with this relationship. Considering Sonny’s past of being a strip club owner if he had I would have been annoyed.

Surprisingly the first people at the crash were Dante and Brenda, Carly and Jason in another car quickly got there. Michael, showing leadership skills, and Molly got to the road. He got cell reception, spoke to Lucky at the PCPD and shared news about the crash with his cousin. Brenda spent time with Molly and met soon to be step-daughter Krissy too.

Cameron had some scratches and had to stay at the hospital overnight. Lucky agreed to sit by his bedside, while he slept. Cameron seems to like Siobhan even if she is Lucky’s new girlfriend. Maxie and Matt helped Cameron during the rescue, which I doubt Elizabeth would have liked due to past history. These episodes also allowed Jason a short time with Jake. Liz left Jake with Sam and Jason, while she had to do other things at the hospital. Seeking Jason and Jake play with motorcycles was cute.

We had a few moments of Alexis with all her three girls, Sam, Krissy and Molly. It seems like it has been months, since they all were together as Molly was with Ric at Thanksgiving and the girls weren’t at Luke and Tracy’s wedding before Christmas. I hope we get more scenes of them together in 2011. Kristina was left at the hospital alone; Ali stopped by and passed out at her feet. She died on the operating table as Hallelujah ala Jeff Buckley played. Ali’s death kind of felt like Leyla, as we didn’t see the character for months; she was finally happy and tragically perished. Ali may have been a character I could have grown to like, if we had gotten to know her, but it wasn’t to be. Sonny comforted Krissy over what happened to Ali. He mentioned Stone, and how helpless he felt that if they had figured out Stone was sick earlier perhaps he wouldn’t have died.

Maxie got territorial with Matt, and got upset over Lisa wanting to set his arm. Patrick mentioned how this injury could hurt Matt’s career as a surgeon. Is this foreshadowing? Robin along with Mac showed happiness and relief that Maxie wasn’t hurt. Dante didn’t leave his mother’s side once she got out of surgery as she could die. Johnny stopped in, but didn’t see Olivia as he believed she wouldn’t want to see her former boyfriend. Theo wanted to talk to him about the court case, but Sonny made him leave.

Above was a summary and what I liked & here are some of my quibbles.

When I think of bus crashes and General Hospital my mind instantly goes back to BJ and how she died in a school bus crash. Maxie got BJ’s heart, and she didn’t mention that history. Saying that people around her get hurt and/or die, isn’t the same as referencing another crash. Having Robin or Mac think about it while waiting at the hospital would have been appropriate as well.

As a community building event, General Hospital sponsored a bus trip to the ski slopes. In the story, the crash occurs on I-55, and per many complaints on the net there is no I-55 in upstate NY, though perhaps there are Route 55s. One of the things that bugged me a tad was how no one knew who was on the bus. Anytime I have gone on a bus trip through an organization and not a bus company, I had to pay in advance and give them personal information. The idea that they didn’t have the list at the hospital shocked me especially with the amount of people under 18 in attendance. Also when the bus driver changed the route, wouldn’t he have told someone? Also are we to believe that Morgan is the only person who made a phone call. So no one sent any online messages from the restaurant and it was mainly teens, was there a cell phone ban or something. They couldn’t track the GPS in anyone’s phone on the trip either; I was expecting to see Spinelli on it at the computer trying to find their location in that way especially considering Maxie was on the bus.

This isn’t a true complaint, but something I found slightly amusing how “Hallelujah” was seen as a tune the teens didn’t know, but was cool back in Steve and Olivia’s day. In 2010, that song seemed extremely pervasive on television. It was performed by KD Lang during the Winter Olympics in Canada, Simon picked it for Lee the eventual winner of the season to do on American Idol, and Michael Bolton filled in for Susan Boyle and joined a children’s choir to sing it on Dancing with the Stars. Those three occurrences I could name off the top of my head. No one on the bus heard it on television. I can’t believe they didn’t have Molly mention DWTS and say how Sam made her watch as it would have been an inside joke. They could have even done a product placement mentioning Soapnet as they rerun The OC and it plays during a memorable scene of that program. That had me laughing as I guess no one was musically inclined or watched those shows.

So while I had complaints about the bus crash, especially that it wasn’t festive. My summary was longer than the quibbles. At least this time, none of Edward’s relatives died. Hopefully there will be some ramifications for what happened on that snowy, icy day. Getting into as serious accident, even if one is not injured can be a game changer.
