GH: Robin and Stone Together Again

This week on General Hospital the show gave us a treat by reuniting Robin and Stone as Robin “saw” him while stuck in a well. The program brought back Michael Sutton to play his late character Michael “Stone” Cates. I haven’t been reading comments online about these scenes so I wouldn’t be influenced by what others had to say.

Stone and Robin were the epitome of tragic romance as Stone was HIV Positive and didn’t know it. Sadly, he passed on the disease to Robin, as on occasion they were intimate without using a condom. He had gotten one HIV test, which was negative, that he didn’t follow up and later it was discovered he had full blown AIDS. If he had started treatment earlier, perhaps he would have lived and Robin would not have gotten the illness. Since it was caught so early, she started to get treatment and has been living with the disease for 15 years.

Even though Robin and Stone’s relationship ended sadly and painfully, she never forgot her first love. If he hadn’t been ill, they may still have been together now. They may have driven each other crazy at first, but in time they wished for a future together. At the time as I’ve admitted, I was extremely upset over what happened in this story. As I’ve gotten older I realized that was the point that it could happen to anyone.

GH having Robin and Stone interact again even if it was a dream brought back a lot of memories. I appreciated the mention of the Nurses Ball and how she made him perform Romeo and Juliet with her during the event. They also mentioned his joy over bungee jumping over the bridge. The daughter that Stone and Robin could never have together that was dubbed Anna Karen was also referenced. Even after all this time, hearing about these scenes transports me back to watching the episodes. It is wonderful to have these things to go back to even if the end was sad.

One of the other things I appreciated was that GH has continued to have Robin still love Stone. He lives on by her having a good life helping others. While it may be hard on Robin’s husband Patrick to deal with a ghost, it is realistic that a part of Robin wonders what if even if she had been happy with her life until her husband cheated.

Robin needs to live and fight to get out of the well to be reunited with her family. Seeing Stone perhaps gave her some peace during this captivity. Of course, just the concept of being in a well is weird even if there is the story about a baby being rescued from a well years ago. That’s just one of those stories I haven’t seen anywhere other than on a soap opera. The slightly ludicrous situation did not take me out of these scenes thankfully as I would have been so disappointed if they had. I’m glad General Hospital took the opportunity to bring Michael Sutton on to act with Kimberly McCullough one more time.
