Thoughts about the 46th Annual Daytime Emmys

The Daytime Emmys aired on Sunday, May 5, 2019. Below are the winners and my thoughts about the show.

The show was about three hours on Sunday night, though there were technical difficulties with the livestream, and to see the best writing and directing awards, I had to wait until tonight. This year was interesting with how all of the acting awards went to people who had not won in their category previously except for one. Some categories I didn't have an opinion on anything, so I've just listed the nominees and the winners.

When it came to the show itself, the tributes were for Sesame Street, which will be 50 in the fall, Kathie Lee Gifford, and Extra, which will be 25. The lifetime achievement awards went to Judge Judy (Amy Poehler crashed the show to present it to her, as it was a surprise), and Jacques Pepin, the chef whose main tribute was during the show on Friday. There was a blooper reel shown mainly funny live moments. The Sesame Street characters opened the show and then appeared later, in the beginning of the program a group of kids, plus Abby and Elmo sang "Sing a Song" and "Sesame Street", and three human cast members appeared. Later on there was a clip package about the program. Kathie Lee got a package, and got to speak, as she is leaving Today also. The Extra clips started from day one, and showed current and past hosts. The in memory of section didn't include Carmen Duncan or Candice Earley, which were two omissions that shouldn't have happened.

OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES/WRITING/DIRECTING

The Bold and the Beautiful
Days of Our Lives
General Hospital
The Young and the Restless — WINNER

So Y&R won best show, in a year that was controversial for a lot of the audience. The Big Little Lies inspired story was just okay in comparison to the HBO drama. I think if someone didn't see that story they probably would have found more enjoyment from what Y&R did with a similar tale. They also won best writing and directing. Mal Young who was fired from the program accepted both series and writing awards.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES

Marci Miller (Abigail, Days)
Heather Tom (Katie, B&B)
Maura West (Ava, GH)
Jacqueline MacInnes Wood (Steffy, B&B) — WINNER
Laura Wright (Carly, GH)

Jacqueline MacInnes Wood is the lead actress on B&B, so her win didn't upset me like a lot of viewers. I was happy for her, and other than Marci Miller, the others all have Emmys already.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES

Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) — WINNER
Peter Bergman (Jack, Y&R)
Tyler Christopher (Stefan, Days)
Billy Flynn (Chad, Days)
Jon Lindstrom (Ryan/Kevin, GH)

The last time Maurice Benard won this award it was 2003, and the award show was on live tv. I can understand how his material about his father's illness would get people to vote for him. The story on Days, was one I didn't like, so hard to judge the acting, and due to how reels are done getting a dual role win seems to be more difficult than years past.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES

Kassie DePaiva (Eve, Days)
Linsey Godfrey (Sarah, Days)
Martha Madison (Belle, Days)
Beth Maitland (Traci, Y&R)
Mishael Morgan (Hilary, Y&R)
Vernee Watson (Stella, GH) — WINNER

Last year Vernee won for this role as a guest cast member. The story this past year was even more prominent, so she had even more time to shine. That said, I was moved by the material when Hilary died on Y&R, so I would have been happy if Mishael won. I would have preferred Martha to be in the guest category, as she was a guest with the rule change.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
Max Gail (Mike, GH) — WINNER
Bryton James (Devon, Y&R)
Eric Martsolf (Brady, Days)
Greg Rikaart (Leo, Days)
Dominic Zamprogna (Dante, GH)

The Mike health story was a good one for reels in 2019. I think Max did a great job with the material that was realistic, I didn't care for seeing someone with Alzheimer's causing a fire, which Y&R did with Dina previously, and I didn't like that either.

OUTSTANDING YOUNGER ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES
Hayley Erin (Kiki, GH) — WINNER
Olivia Rose Keegan (Claire, Days)
Victoria Konefal (Ciara, Days)
Chloe Lanier (Nelle, GH)
Eden McCoy (Josslyn, GH)

Kiki died in 2018, so it is the last time, Hayley Erin could get nominated for the role, unless things really change. Also since the younger performer categories are decided on 10 minutes of footage from four episodes, I can see why she had the material. Some of the others have had a lot more in 2019 to chose from (even though we are only in May) than they did in 2018.

OUTSTANDING YOUNGER ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
Lucas Adams (Tripp, Days)
William Lipton (Cameron, GH)
Kyler Pettis (Theo, Days) — WINNER
Garren Stitt (Oscar, GH)
Zach Tinker (Fenmore, Y&R)

Theo was written out very early in 2018, and I miss the character, so it was nice to see Kyler Pettis win. The others continued on their shows in 2019, so they still have a chance for gold. Typically I prefer people to win or even get nominated if they were on for the majority of the calendar year, but in the case of an actor getting dumped, this feeling is severely lessened.

OUTSTANDING GUEST PERFORMER IN A DRAMA SERIES

Philip Anthony-Rodriguez (Miguel, Days)
Patricia Bethune (Mary, GH) — WINNER
Wayne Brady (Dr. Buckingham, B&B)
Kate Mansi (Abigail, Days)
Thaao Penghlis (Andre, Days)

Mary Pat was a good character to dislike, so I think Patricia Bethune did a good job in the role. This year there were no restrictions about putting yourself in this category as in past years, you had to be playing a new character.

OUTSTANDING DIGITAL DAYTIME DRAMA

After Forever — WINNER
The Bay The Series
Giants
The New 30
Youth & Consequences

Never heard of After Forever, but the topic sounds sad. It got the majority of the acting awards during the technical Emmys, so it seems like people like it.

OUTSTANDING GAME SHOW HOST

John Michael Higgins, America Says
Alex Trebek, Jeopardy! — WINNER
Wayne Brady, Let’s Make a Deal
Pat Sajak, Wheel of Fortune
Chris Harrison, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire

Seeing Alex Trebek win was cool, as I was glad he could make it.

OUTSTANDING GAME SHOW

Family Feud — WINNER
Jeopardy!
Let’s Make a Deal
The Price Is Right
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire

A producer at Family Feud talked and mentioned her time at "Classic Concentration", which reruns on Buzzr.

OUTSTANDING CULINARY HOST

Giada De Laurentiis, Giada Entertains
Molly Yeh, Girl Meets Farm
Pati Jinich, Pati’s Mexican Table
Catherine Fulvio, A Taste of Ireland: Ballyknocken Cookery School
Valerie Bertinelli, Valerie’s Home Cooking — WINNER

OUTSTANDING CULINARY PROGRAM

Barefoot Contessa: Cook Like a Pro
Cook’s Country
Eat. Race. Win.
Giada Entertains
Lidia’s Kitchen
Valerie’s Home Cooking — WINNER

I don't watch daytime cooking shows, I can't comment.

OUTSTANDING LEGAL/COURTROOM PROGRAM

Couples Court
Judge Judy
Judge Mathis
Paternity Court — WINNER
The People’s Court

I've watched Paternity Court and finished the episode. It is a less confrontational version of Maury. Due to the hook and its short length I get why people view it.

OUTSTANDING MORNING PROGRAM

CBS Sunday Morning — WINNER
CBS This Morning
Good Morning America
Today

OUTSTANDING ENTERTAINMENT NEWS PROGRAM

Access
DailyMailTV — WINNER
ET
Extra
Inside Edition

I think DailyMailTV is not on a major station where I live, and it is newer than the others so I don't think I've watched a full episode.
