Below are my thoughts on the two Christmas themed episodes that "The Young and the Restless" aired in 2017 on December 22 and 25.
The first episode was a regular Christmas event, while the second was vignettes though not in a fantasy setting.
The Abbott Christmas was not cheerful due to the infighting within the family. Jack was the only man, as Billy sent Phyllis in his stead as he was with Jill. Hilary was invited by Jack, which didn't make Dina happy. Abby was surprised that her Abbott family was not getting along, as that is more typical with the Newmans. Traci wanted everyone to get along, but eventually everyone left except for Phyllis and Hillary.
The Ashby twins were apart at Christmas. Mattie is with her mother and Devon at the club, while Charlie is at the Chancellor mansion with Cane. Jill and Esther work together to make a good holiday. Charlie gave his mother a book about Paris, while Mattie gave her a homemade family scrapbook. Cane's gift from "Lily" was a blue blanket with Sam's name, though it was really Charlie's gift. Cane and Lily discovered this on the phone.
Nikki spends Christmas Eve, with Paul and Christine, but doesn't share anything incriminating about Victor. The Ashbys, Devon, Hillary, Esther and Jill end up at the club, and Tessa comes out singing "Joy to the World". Phyllis and Billy end up back at home. Jack tells Ash about how she can't be CEO as she isn't a blood relative.
My main thought about this was surprise that the episode didn't end on a happy note, but an argument.
The second episode was in sections named after holiday music: "We Three Kings", "What Child is This", "The Twelve Days of Christmas", and Angels We Have Heard on High".
We Three Kings was about Sharon and Mariah's relationship. Neither woman knew what to buy the other. Sharon tried to get advice from Faith, who was trying to convince her mom to get her sister a pony. Mariah asked for Nick's help, but he wasn't sure what to suggest and didn't agree with her already purchased gifts. They end up exchanging gifts, and give each other the same red plaid shirt with sparkles on it. In Mariah's gift to Sharon, there was an ornament that said "Mom", which surprised Sharon, but Mariah said how it is hard for her to use that word due to her awful adoptive mother. Sharon showed Mariah Cassie's Christmas stocking and a snow globe, which she then gave to Mariah, and Mariah called her Mom.
What Child is This took place at The Hilary Hour, as she had a live broadcast, with Devon reading Christmas letters from kids. Mariah appreciated Hilary's gift to herself, which Hilary felt was the wrong color. A former teacher of Hilary sent her childhood Santa letter to the show, and Devon read it on air, it was signed Annie, but no one knew it was hers. When the cameras stopped rolling, she admitted it was her, and that's all she wanted a family, and a nice dress and pots and pans for her mother. Hilary allowed Mariah to be on camera, and then gifted Mariah with the discarded clothing. The section ended with Hilary writing another letter to Santa.
The Twelve Days of Christmas was about Billy and Phyllis getting each other the perfect holiday gift. Phyllis got Billy skydiving instruction, but his gift didn't arrive. Phyllis spoke to her son, while Billy went out with Abby. They spoke about still being family even if not blood-related. Phyllis and Victoria got along for a change, and Victoria spoke of her past with Billy. Billy and Phyllis were home again, he made her a cake, a pear tree arrived at the door, and he bought her five golden rings.
Angels We Have Heard on High was about Nikki meeting Kathy in the park. Nikki's purse went missing, and she told Sharon. Kathy was again with Nikki at Crimson Lights, and they spoke some more. Sharon told Nikki there was no one at the shelter named Kathy, and that it looked like Nikki was talking to herself. Nikki was left with a necklace that had the initials, KC, and she realized somehow she saw Katherine. She went to Katherine's memorial and left the necklace behind wishing her late friend "Merry Christmas".
Each of the four stories, ended up in a split screen with happiness. This episode was interesting in that since it aired on Christmas Day nothing really happened, but it was the opposite of confrontational. At least everyone on screen got along for a change.
