In honor of Melody Thomas Scott playing Nikki Reed Newman (with many names in between), for forty years, "The Young and the Restless" did a special episode in her honor on February 20, 2019. Below are my thoughts.
I appreciated that Y&R did a special Nikki focused clip show about the character's life. The conceit was Nikki was in jail, and she wanted to write a letter to her grandchildren, though some would only see it after they got older. It wasn't only about her relationship with Victor (Eric Braeden) though it was obviously included, but started with her beginnings with her abusive father, and the sister who took care of her Casey. Then we saw Nikki and Paul, then with Greg, references to the cult, and then finally her relationship with Victor. We also saw her with Jack (though only Peter Bergman clips were used), her friendship with Neil (Kristoff St. John) as they shared addiction, some clips with Nick and Victoria (though only Amelia Henlie) and no mentions of Dylan. We also saw her relationship through the years with Kay (Jeanne Cooper).
Y&R was never my show in the way it is some others. So the clips were "new" for the most part to me. I liked the care used with what was chosen, as it wasn't just the same three or four Nikki clips that they show to represent the character, beyond the short part of her at the Bayou, most of the others weren't overplayed. I'm glad that MTS got to her 40th anniversary and the show decided to not ignore the milestone.
