Primetime TV Update: October 2018

Below is my list of what I finished in October 2018.

This month I wrapped up some Summer series before starting on the new Fall television season.

From WGNAmerica, but originally airing in Canada, was "Carter" which was similar to "Take Two" that aired on ABC, this summer and the late show "Castle". Carter was a television star, who played a detective, who went back home, and solved mysteries. Since it was Canadian, it reminded me of the 90s show "Due South" though without Mounties, and the actor who played Donnie on "Orphan Black" was in a major role.

In the streaming realm, I viewed "Bodyguard", which is on BBC in the UK, and Netflix in the US. This was the most well-received new original show on BBC in many years (since things changed with on demand.) It was very entertaining though intense, like a movie, but told in episodic format about a bodyguard who was dealing with terrorists. Hulu had the fourth and last season of "Unreal" available for streaming, as it didn't air on regular tv. The fourth season was darker than two and three, but really good in a guilty pleasure sort of way.

On demand, I watched two shows, "Harem" from 1986, which was a two-part miniseries starring Nancy Travis as a woman who was kidnapped and forced into a Sultan's harem during the Ottoman empire. I don't know if something like this would be made today, or if it was, it would be done very differently. The other was "ThisClose" from SundanceNow, the first season first aired on the online only service, but the first season was on demand on Sundance. It was about two best friends who happen to be deaf, Kate can speak, and grew up in a hearing family, while Ben never uses his voice, and is a gay writer. The show is explicit, but the unique point of view, and using deaf performers makes it an interesting watch.

In reality shows, I viewed "Making it", which was a light craft show in the same vein of "Great British Bake Off", except with a bit more humor that aired on NBC over the Summer.

Happy viewing!
