Days: Steve's in Jail

In August 2018, we saw the last episodes with Steve "Patch" Johnson for the foreseeable future as Stephen Nichols and "Days of Our Lives" parted ways. Below are my thoughts on all of this.

Steve lost his one working eye, due to the ISA wanting to kill him, and John (Drake Hogestyn) trying to postpone it. The poison caused damage, and Steve could not see at all. The DiMera's had a company that made a bionic eye, but Steve didn't want it as he hated Stefan (Tyler Christopher). Kayla (Mary Beth Evans) decided that she didn't want Steve to be sightless, so she did Stefan's bidding (getting dirt on Kate, who killed Vivian, who isn't dead, but that's another story.) Steve was told that the DiMera's no longer owned the manufacturer of the eye. Unfortunately for him, and Kayla, due to Steve having ties to the ISA, he has access to classified documents. Stefan took advantage of this, and has state secrets, so Steve is culpable for sharing this data without his knowledge. He's off camera being held for crimes against the state, and Shane also off screen is supposedly trying to help. Before Steve was arrested, Kayla was going to finally tell Steve the truth about his eye, but now that can't happen without the character on canvas.

When it comes to my feelings about the situation, I wish something had worked out, as this ending is so open-ended. Having Steve in prison for something that isn't his fault is soapy, but not having any sort of true "last" scenes, was disappointing. I hope the show lasts long enough for all of this to be resolved. It is too bad that Stephen Nichols hadn't agreed to recurring in the interim if he wasn't happy with their initial contract offer, as the character being "gone" at least for now is frustrating. That said actors have to do what they think is right, and as they say the show must go on...SIGH Anyway this is the most annoying thing to me about Days these days, as much of the rest of the show I'm enjoying.
