Thoughts on Daytime Emmy Nominations 2018

On Wednesday, March 21, 2018 Emmyonline.com posted the 45th annual drama performer nominations. The winners again will be decided based on who got the most votes during prenominations. Major categories were announced on "The Talk", which got six nominations. Below is the list and my thoughts on those who were included this year.

All four soap operas: "The Bold and the Beautiful", "Days of Our Lives", "General Hospital", and "The Young and the Restless" were nominated for best show, writing, and direction, so nothing exciting to be seen here.  Casting didn't have B&B, and Days didn't have costumes, but the technical awards listed all four shows otherwise. In original song, Y&R had one entry, B&B had one, GH had two, and Days had one. In Outstanding Stunt Coordination,B&B, Days and Y&R are in competition with two Netflix shows.

The web shows had a lot of soap cast members, but since I don't watch enough to comment, the lists are on the official site as a Word document, PDF, and an HTML doc. Unfortunately the lists of who was nominated outside of the actors names has been omitted, and everything just has show names and nothing more.

The major award nominations were shown on "The Talk" in two video segments.

The first was for the soap nominations. All of the acting awards were mentioned (which used to not happen, and the best show.)

The second was for the other major show related awards (for talk, game, morning, and news programming.)

When it comes to the show totals:

  • B&B - 18 (last year they had 23)
  • Days - 25 (last year they had 22)
  • GH - 26 (last year they had 23)
  • Y&R - 25 (last year they had 25 also)

The game show categories  we had five shows and hosts nominated. Steve Harvey, Alex Trebek, Wayne Brady, Pat Sajak, and Chris Harrison were nominated. Like last year, Sajak's show of "Wheel of Fortune" wasn't nominated. The others' respective shows: "Family Feud", "Jeopardy!", "Let's Make a Deal", and "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" were nominated along with "The Price is Right". Millionaire and its host Chris Harrison replaced the cancelled "Celebrity Name Game" and Craig Ferguson.

The weirdest thing about the acting awards in 2018 is that there won't be any repeat winners as none of the 2017 winners are even nominated in 2018. I can't recall the last time that wasn't a possibility.

Lead Actress
Eileen Davidson (Ashley, Y&R)
Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis, GH)
Marci Miller (Abby, Days)
Maura West (Ava, GH)
Laura Wright (Carly, GH)

Last year's Gina Tognoni (Phyllis from Y&R) didn't get nominated again. The only person who hasn't won previously is Marci Miller, though since she has been on Days such a short time that is understandable.

Lead Actor
Peter Bergman (Jack, Y&R)
Michael Easton (Finn, GH)
John McCook (Eric, B&B)
Billy Miller (Jason/Drew, GH)
James Reynolds (Abe, Days)

Last year's winner Scott Clifton (Liam, B&B) isn't nominated, and only Billy and Peter have awards and Peter is the only one to get nominated last year also (he now has as many nominations as Susan Lucci tying the record for acting).

Supporting Actress
Marla Adams (Dina, Y&R)
Camryn Grimes (Mariah, Y&R)
Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie, Days)
Elizabeth Hendrickson (Chloe, Y&R)
Jacqueline MacInnes Wood (Steffy, B&B)
Mishael Morgan (Hilary, Y&R)

Last year's winner Kate Mansi is off of Days and Marci Miller is playing Abby. This category has a lot of different ages, so we'll see what happens. Also no one nominated this year, was selected to get to this point last year.

Supporting Actor
Wally Kurth (Ned, GH)
Chandler Massey (Will, Days)
Anthony Montgomery (Andre, GH)
Greg Rikaart (Kevin, Y&R)
Greg Vaughan (Eric, Days)

Last year's winner Steve Burton got the award for his work as Dylan on Y&R, he is no longer on that show. Like with the supporting actress, no one from 2017's category is in 2018s.

Younger Actress
Reign Edwards (Nicole, B&B)
Hayley Erin (Kiki, GH)
Cait Fairbanks (Tessa, Y&R)
Olivia Rose Keegan (Claire, Days)
Chloe Lanier (Nelle, GH)

Last year's winner was Lexi Ainsworth from GH, who had a short-term story and wasn't on the ballot. Only Reign was nominated in this category last year, and she is again.

Younger Actor
Lucas Adams (Tripp, Days)
Rome Flynn (Zende, B&B)
Tristan Lake Leabu (Reed, Y&R)
Casey Moss (JJ, Days)
Hudson West (Jake, GH)

Last year's winner Bryan Craig isn't nominated (his character, Morgan is dead), and no one nominated last year has repeated.

The guest category nominees are:

Ryan Ashton (Zach, Y&R)
Robb Derringer (Scooter, Days)
John Enos (Roger, Days)
Morgan Fairchild (Anjelica, Days)
Vernee Watson (Stella, GH)

Jim O'Heir won last year for a guest stint on B&B, and you really can't repeat in this category. Zach had a dating app that was a front to sell sex, Scooter was a porn addict, Roger was an Elvis impersonator, Morgan was a recast of a character who was gone for decades, and Vernee's character is still alive and on canvas.

Congrats to the nominees, I hope we get to see the reels soon. The show will be April 29, and will be live streamed again though through an official website, Facebook, and Twitter. Hopefully they will keep it online for later viewing, and provide a better feed for the technical awards and pre-show.
