Y&R: Shemar's Visit

This past Wednesday and Thursday (September 10 & 11, 2014), Shemar Moore visited "The Young and the Restless" playing the character who made him famous to daytime soap fans Malcolm Winters. The two episode stint was a lot of fun and I felt the need to write about it.

The last time we saw Malcolm Winters, it wasn't Shemar Moore in the role. Basically Malcolm lost his lady love to his older brother Neil (Kristoff St. John), who ended up having a child with her named Moses. He left town to work, and that was that. This visit was due to Neil's blindness. Cane (Daniel Goddard) called Malcolm as he thought this would help everyone. He met Hilary for the first time, and also saw Lily and Devon. There was no time for him to visit with the children, though he did explain about how important his photography was.

Thankfully the majority of the material that Shemar was given was just with Kristoff. Since they've known each other for two decades, it felt like coming home. I was glad that per TVGuide.com that the actors got the material changed to better suit them. I also appreciated the flashbacks, as normally they wouldn't be used, but since Shemar was there it could be done more easily.

My favorite part was how they sparred, but in truth Malcolm and Neil love one another and know each other better than anyone else in the world. Neil has been rushing into relationships after losing Dru. And Malcolm spends his life running away from his family due to everything in his life.

At the end of the visit, Malcolm spoke facing the screen, though it felt like he was talking to the audience. While I know it wasn't a true breaking of the fourth wall, I like that. It was also good that Malcolm's visit was mentioned by other characters even if he didn't see them on camera.

I hope that we see Shemar on Y&R again someday. I don't expect it next month or even next year, but if anything else serious happens to the Winters clan it would be appropriate to see Malcolm.
