Orphan Black Back this weekend

Season two of Orphan Black is premiering on Saturday evening on BBCAmerica. Prior to the new season, the channel is marathoning the first season. Below are some reasons why I really enjoy this show without giving away too much information.

Here is a short list as to why someone who enjoys soaps and likes urban fantasy may want to sample the program.

  • The show takes the "evil twin" concept to an extreme as the main character is a clone. Dual roles on soaps are common, but this program takes it to a new level.
  • It also deals with the concept of mistaken identity.
  • A same sex relationship between two female characters: one of which is played by the main actress Tatiana Maslany.
  • A main character (Felix) is gay.
  • The unique concept of family as the "sisters" have to interact.
  • Life and death as the clones are being hunted and some have had health problems.
  • The police are ineffective just like on soaps, though on this show it is for a good reason. There is no way any detective would assume "clones".
  • A shadowy organization with a lot more to discover.
  • Sex scenes of all types and a bit of nudity, which is more than you see on a soap, but less unlike HBO etc. no bare breasts as it is still "basic cable".
  • One of the regular characters is played by a soap opera alum Dylan Bruce who was on As the World Turns years ago.
If you have BBCAmerica and the time, this is the kind of show you may enjoy. While my list of reasons to watch isn't complete, it gives a good overview of why I like it.
