Days: Thoughts on the Special April 21, 2014 Episode

Today, Days of our Lives had a special episode featuring EJ and Sami. Below are my thoughts on the program, which includes spoilers, so if you haven't seen it don't continue to read this entry.

EJ (James Scott) and Sami (Ali Sweeney) were the focus of the April 21, 2014 episode. It began with a photo of EJ and Abby (Kate Mansi) arriving at the Dimera mansion. Sami saw the image, and obviously got extremely upset over her fiance's duplicity. Abby had dated EJ's brother Chad and babysat their kids. He even gave the excuse that he slept with Abby to protect them because of what happened with Nick. So basically, EJ whored himself for the cause, and that revelation did nothing to calm Sami. There was a full segment of Sami and EJ interacting as she reacted to this situation. The scenes were melodramatic to the extreme and reminded me of what used to be on soaps years ago. Whether that was seen as a good thing or not is up to one's opinion.

Marlena (Deidre Hall) came in as Sami was freaking out and decided to help her to leave the mansion. EJ went over at the Horton house to speak with Abby. He discovered that Abby was pregnant after all, and they had both been lied to about her status. Sami comes in to confront Abby, and all hell breaks loose. Jennifer (Melissa Reeves) is shocked to hear that her daughter slept with EJ. Unlike other times when soap characters have fallen off stairs, Abby was actually pushed. We see her on the ground, and have no idea of her status.

This ends with EJ alone with the picture, and everything we saw being part of his imagination. (The rest of the episode has EJ meeting Abby in the park, and Marlena, Sami and Jennifer discussing wedding gowns. Sami picked one, but that doesn't mean the wedding will actually happen as planned.)

Seriously, they did a multi-segment fake out and promoted it to Soap Opera Digest. I'm not sure if I should scold them or applaud them for their audacity. I did appreciate that Days did give the scenes time on screen and didn't cut them into short segments. It also made me wonder what the actual reveal would be like.
