Y&R: Latest Casting Shocker

Today it was released that Michael Muhney (Adam Newman) on "The Young & the Restless" has fired from the show. The hashtag #SaveMichaelMuhney is being used by his supporters on twitter. This comes as a surprise as he inked a new contract earlier in the year. Below are my thoughts, which are somewhat mixed over the situation.

Once Y&R made Adam guilty of a hit-and-run, which took the life of young Delia Abbott, I wondered how on earth they would get around this crime, and always thought this kind of plot is the kind that you use as an exit story when an actor chooses to leave and you don't want to recast. It typically isn't a "we want to fire, you" kind of scenario. (When Y&R's current executive producer was still at General Hospital, they did a similar hit-and-run story. The guilty character didn't pay and there was outrage. I wonder if that isn't part of why this happened, but really who knows.) Due to who is in charge at Y&R, and some other casting decisions she has made in the past at other shows, I wasn't stunned by this, but then again very little surprises me in the world of soaps (except for good news). So while I feel the pain, I am not suffering from the shock.

Adam did some other awful things to Sharon and Ashley, and the program kept the character around even if it made people hate him. It looks like instead of redeeming Adam, they are shifting him off canvas. (It is possible the character will come back with another face, but we shall see what happens there.) That being said for many the only saving grace is Muhney in the role.

Losing ones job at anytime is awful, having it happen at the holidays is even worse. I feel for Michael Muhney and his family. I've linked his tweets from earlier today. Hopefully we'll know more details tomorrow.
