Just wanted to check in with a few thoughts about the Summer paternity story on "The Young and the Restless." A lot has been said on this topic and while the story is ongoing I just couldn't keep my fingers quiet.
Summer (now played by Hunter King) is Phyllis's (Michelle Stafford) daughter. She was conceived while Phyllis was married to Jack (Peter Bergman) and having an affair with Nick (Josh Morrow). For years, the audience was told that Nick was Summer's father. Nick became worried when Summer was dating Jack's son Kyle (Hartley Sawyer), so he had the DNA test run again to make sure that Summer and Kyle weren't committing incest. Once Nick got a result back that he wasn't Summer's father he freaked out and finally told Phyllis about the DNA test that was inconclusive all those years ago. Then he shared the new result, and instead of telling Jack and Summer what they found out, Phyllis tried to seduce Kyle away from Summer. Eventually Summer and Jack were told what Nick discovered.
Another twist occurred as Nick's former wife Sharon (Sharon Case) told their late daughter Cassie (Camryn Grimes) that Sharon tampered with the DNA that Nick just had performed. So now it seems that Jack and Summer aren't father and daughter, but everyone in town believes that to be the case. Some viewers seem to like this plot, but I can't say I am one of them. Here are my pros and cons on the situation.
Pros:
We get to see Cassie even if she is Sharon's hallucination as the character should have never been killed off in the first place.
The actors have something significant to emote about.
Cons:
Nick has been vilified as while he waffles with relationships the fact that he could keep Summer away from Jack who was his stepfather for many years is a bit shocking. If Nick had the same issues with Jack that Victor did the lies would be more understandable.
Sharon has done "crazy" things before, but she was horrified over what Adam (Michael Muhney) did to Ashley (Eileen Davidson) and to her with Faith. Now she is keeping a child from her rightful parents.
If Y&R wanted to come up with something to get people talking they are succeeded, but sadly I think a lot of fans whether they aren't happy. If you love Phyllis, you aren't happy that she was lied to for all these years and had to kiss Kyle out of nowhere. If you love Nick, you don't appreciate how the character lied for many years about a paternity issue just like Adam. If you love Sharon, you are frustrated because she is "crazy" again and hurting her Noah and Faith by lying about Summer. If you love Jack or Summer, you wish they wouldn't be played in regards to the paternity as they will be ultimately hurt again.
It would be a worthwhile story to pursue if they actually pursued it. They left open the possibility of Summer being Jack's from the start - why not explore the story and do something interesting with it.
